Taking a cue from Mal (one of our mods on the VMK boards), I am starting a thread to discuss the problems that we may be facing soon about access to the internet and web sites.

Quoting from savetheinternet.com,
"Congress is pushing a law that would abandon the Internet's First Amendment -- a principle called Network Neutrality that prevents companies like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast from deciding which Web sites work best for you -- based on what site pays them the most. If the public doesn't speak up now, our elected officials will cave to a multi-million dollar lobbying campaign."

Quoted from It's our Net:
"The giant phone and cable companies are trying to take control of the Internet away from the public and convert it into their own private, corporate network They're boasting that they'll create premium lanes on the Internet so that people who can pay get seen and those who can't don't. Tell Congress to keep the Internet open and free and to protect the rights of users to see what you want to see and go anywhere you want to go on the Internet – just as you can today.
Consumers
If you are a consumer – a Mom looking for healthcare information to protect your family; a home-school parent using the Internet as part of your education plan; an email user staying in touch with your family and friends – you will have a degraded slower Internet experience with certain Web sites. Some Web sites will even be unavailable unless additional fees are paid.

Small Business
If you are a small business, you may not be able to survive online. If you are an aspiring entrepreneur, you may be impeded from providing the “next big thing” on the Internet.

Schools & Churches
If you are a small non-profit organization, like a church or a school, you may not be able to get your messages out to congregants or student families without paying more."

Please check out these links and discuss and decide whether to take your own actions or not. Also, please pass the information to all your family and friends.

This is just the thin end of the wedge. The internet will not be allowed to survive in it's present form by those in power. It gives ordinary people too much freedom and access to information that they don't want you to have. The internet will be shut down and then re-opened on a subscription only basis and governments will decide which sites can and cannot exist. Sites like this will not exist.

And people will blindly accept this and argue in favour of it because they'll say that the internet is going to be used by global terrorists to bring down financial institutions and destroy civilization.

Basically the same arguments they've used to steal all the other freedoms they've taken from us.

The internet gives people power. They don't want you to have that.

Is it possible that with the recent shift in power that the legistlation won't pass? I know when I first looked at savetheinternet.com several months ago it was mainly the conservative republicans voting for it. Has this changed in the last several months?

I don't believe any of this could ever happen. Even if the gov't did pass some type of "law." Prohibition worked so well at drying up this country, didn't it?
