Please help settle an important debate that DH and I have had for years....

This debate has been raging between us for several years without a victor. At times it has been fierce and out in the open. At times it has merely raised its head in the form of subtle eye rolls. Neither side has ever emerged victorious, and we have finally decided that we are at a deadlock. And so, we bring it to you, oh great and powerful DIS'ers, to make the final decision that will end this feud and decide once and for all which one of us is the crazy one with malfunctioning taste buds.








Do you think plastic zip top bags make the food inside taste plastic-y?

I answered yes. Not the little sandwich bags but the big freezer bags have a strong plastic smell and sometimes a taste on the food.

Yes! I've noticed that food picks up a weird taste if it's left in a plastic bag too long.

I agree with Wishes. I have noticed if food is left in a bag too long it does taste weird. If I know that something is going to be gone quick I will use a plastic bag, if I think it will stay awhile I use another container. It's funny, but leave it to a fellow Diser, but I was just thinking about this the other day!!

Yes, I agree with the above poster. Especially if it's frozen too long, the bag imparts an odor to the food.
But for short term storage, I detect no odor.

If you would have asked me this question two days ago, I would have voted no.....but just this past Friday, my family and I went to the movies. To save myself a few calories, I popped my own popcorn at home, let it cool, and poured it into a gallon-sized plastic freezer bag to take with me. It was in the bag for about 20minutes before I went to eat it. To my disappointment, it tasted like the plastic bag. I passed it to my husband, and he said the same thing...."it tastes like the bag." I have never noticed this before, but the popcorn definitely tasted plastic-y. I have to vote yes that it can taste plastic-y.

I voted it doesn't taste like plastic.

However, I feel that aluminum foil ruins food if left on it too long; makes it taste metallic. So...I might not be the best judge.

However, I think it might be best to get wax paper/foil for the one who doesn't like it, and plastic for the person who doesn't mind it, and just split the leftovers or wrap sandwiches etc for the person who will eat it. Just seems like the kindest thing to do, overall.

I already voted, but I wanted to add something. I do feel like there is a metallic taste to beverages that are in a can. I always prefer the bottle as an alternative because of this.

I've never noticed anything about Ziploc bags, but the plastic containers can get really stinky from what's stored in them.

OT, but I just saw this--Wall-E is Oprah now? Last time I noticed, he was Kate Gosselin.

I voted yes. Whenever I take peanut butter and jelly anywhere, it never tastes as good as it does at home; which has led me to blame it on the baggy.

I had to go with "other" sorry.

For short term use (about a week or less) in cool temps, and when the food is placed in the baggies at room temperature or cooler I dno not think it affects the taste

Food stored for a long time, placed in teh bag while still warm, or kept in the bag when it is hot out does tend to pick up the plasticy taste

I notice others say freezing it tends to also pick up the taste--I have never used them in the freezer so I do not know

I agree with others that foil can (mostly under the same circumstances ae the baggies, impart a metalic taste and you can absolutely taste the metal of a canned soda.

Some foods absorb tastes/smells easier than others, also, it depends on what type of bag is used and if the food was stored in the fridge or freezer.

Well, I gotta say - you guys are not helping my case at all!!!

I have always noticed a plastic-y taste for most everything that gets packed into a plastic zip-top bag (it's worse with the store brand bags than it is with the Ziplocs, but I still notice it with Ziplocs). This happens with just about everything - chips, sandwiches, cookies, bread, etc... And even if it's only in there for a few hours (from when it's packed in the morning until lunchtime).

DH has always sworn that I am crazy and it's all in my head, but I know what I taste. Our compromise that we have reached is that he uses zip-top bags when necessary, and I will wrap whatever it is in press & seal. I don't notice the flavor issues with the press & seal. Especially with sandwiches and bread type stuff. We use the Glad containers for everything else.

This came up last night because we had baked some cookies and needed to store them. DH wanted to put them in a Ziploc, but I wouldn't let him because of the plastic-y taste issue. They wound up wrapped in press & seal.
