Friends, Wish Granters & Volunteers:
Most of you know the story of Dakota Gauldin but I would just like to take
a few minutes to refresh your memory.
The Dakota Gauldin story is more than the 13 year-old wish child that
Dwight & I visited in November 2003. It is the story of a very brave child
who after a gallant effort finally succumbed to osteosarcoma and lung
cancer. It is as much a story of the entire family.
After Dakota's shopping spree wish was completed in December 2003 the
family organized a chicken meal cookout that generated over $ 6000.00 for
MAW. Three times the cost of his wish. The following year when Shannon,
Dwight & I were putting together a birthday party for a very sick wish
child in Yadkinville, the Gauldin family were major contributors. Dakota
came dressed in his full Fireman's outfit and his two sisters Casey and
Mecca came dressed in Tigger and Poor Bear costumes which we had rented
for the day. Devonta loved the characters as they were his favorites.
The Gauldin family were major visitors to Baptist in befriending many
other children with life threatening illnesses and on many occasions when
Dwight and I were visiting other children we would meet Dakota and His Mom
in the halls with their gift packages. A very special family who lost an
even more special child last month.
Maybe we can do something in memory of Dakota and in honor of his sisters
Casey and Mecca.
The North Carolina Zoo is running a contest to name the three new lion
cubs recently born at the zoo. The contest is spelled out on their web
site www.nczoo.org. A friend of Dakotas entered Dakota and his two sisters
names for the three lion cubs and his entry is one of the five finalists.
The winner will be selected from votes submitted via email. If the boy
wins he told them that he would donate the prizes to a young cancer
patient in Dakota's memory.
It is time for us to step up to the plate and vote. Go to www.nczoo.org,
click on 'vote now', then on 'Dakota, Casey & Mecca'. Then send the email.
PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO YOUR FRIENDS AND OTHER MAKE A WISH VOLUNTEERS AS
THE CONTEST ENDS AT 6 PM ON MAY 9TH.
