PLEASE HELP! my 1st time on the DVC board, so many questions....

HI! i'm very interested in how this whole renting of points works. when i went over to the rent/trade board,and did a little math, it seems ALOT cheaper to do this. i am soooo clueless

my questions:

*if you rent points, can you stay anywhere on wdw property? or only at select resorts?

*can you still have the disney dining plan?

*do you buy your tickets seperate, or can you get some kind of package?

*how does the resort know about ME when checking in if i'm renting points in someone elses name?

***feel free to tell me anything else i need to know that i didn't ask***

here is what i would LIKE to do:

December 16-26 2007 @ the POLY with ddp, and hopper tickets.

is this possible? like i said.....HELP!!

Short answer to your question is that what you want would be possible, but it probably isn't your best deal.

Using points to stay at anything but a DVC resort is usually not a good deal financially. For example, I used points to stay at AKL the 19th of December. It was 33 points. At a standard $11 per point, that room would have cost me $333 to rent. I could have probably gotten an AP rate around $250 for that room. But answering your questions anyway.

The renter would call members services and make the reservation in your name. And yes, you can use your points at most places on WDW property, definitely at the Poly.

*can you still have the disney dining plan? Yes. You would have to buy it, and the member would do this , I think through members services

*do you buy your tickets seperate, or can you get some kind of package? You can definitely buy separate. Not sure about doing a package, but that's probably fairly unlikely since most packages require a room purchase, and you're not doing that.

*how does the resort know about ME when checking in if i'm renting points in someone elses name? See question 1. Your reservation is actually in YOUR name. The renter will send you a confirmation that has their name as the member, and your name as the guest.

I think it would be cheaper to just go through disney...

i believe poly needs like 45pts per night...

thats around 450 dollars....u could get a room yourself cheaper

No, you can not get the Dining Plan at the Poly on a points reservation. You can only get the dining plan on point reservations at DVC resorts, not regular WDW resorts. And regular WDW resorts on points would likely cost almost as much (if not more) than the cash rate through CRO.

I agree. The places where you could stay to best utilize your money are Old Key West, Saratogo Springs Resort, Beachclub, Wilderness Lodge, and Boardwalk ( these are all DVC resorts ). Hopefully I didn't miss any. These are all very nice places to stay. Have fun.

I realized I made a couple of mistakes in my post. I have never bought the dining plan, so I didn't realize you can only buy it when staying on points if you're at a DVC resort.

I also did my math wrong. $11 per point * 33 points is $366, not $333! Again, not a good financial choice.

one last question (for now, ).....is the WL a DVC resort, or is it just the villas? we stayed at WL before and LOVED IT!!

i will look into all these resorts for our trip.....my dh (and me too!) has his heart set on trying the poly this time, but if i told him we could stay at one of these other resort for about 1/3 of the price.....i'm sure he would love that too!

i did the calculator thingy, and for my dates (dec. 16-26, 07) it says i need 156 points for a studio. then if i found points to rent to $10 each?, its $1,560 for the 10 days. not sure what the ddp would be, and tickets.....
where do you guys buy your tickets?
i've never bought that meal discount card (what is that called again?) is that a better deal?

The dining plan will be $39 per person per day (adults) and will be paid for when you check in. Tickets can be purchased from the Disney website or from any other Disney ticket outlet like Disney store etc. You can go to Disney.com and get the current rates. DVC members enjoy the best Annual Pass discount available from Disney, so many of us utilize that option. Since that is not an option for you, you are best using the website or other discounters.

The DDE card might be what you are talking about for dining discounts. That is only available to Florida residents or annual passholders.

Another thought to consider when thinking DVC studio vs. Disney resort room. With a studio, you get a kitchenette so it makes snacks and in-room breakfasts easy. There's a dorm sized refrigerator, a toaster, and a microwave. You can't cook a meal (unless you're very creative), but breakfasts are fairly easy, which can save you a lot of money (and a lot of hassle in the morning).

Just the Villas - same with the Beach Club and Boardwalk Villas - in fact, you can't use points - even the overprices regular hotel points - at the hotel portions of these resorts, you can only stay in the Villas.

And there are things you should know about staying in the Villas. Most of the studios have one bed and a pullout sofa (OKW is the exception - two beds). There is no daily mousekeeping - (on a short stay expect trash and towel on day four). You'll be bringing your own toiletries (they get replaced on day four - not enough shampoo for our family at least) and coffee service (same deal). Many DVC owners do not feel DVC is as response to guest issues - for instance, the DVC units run pretty much at capacity, so it isn't always possible to switch rooms because you don't like the view.

Additionally, and the big deal - is that you are not making your reservation through Disney. The DVC owner will own the reservation - they have the power to cancel at anytime (though the risk of this is minimal) and you'll need to work with them for things like ME and the Dining Plan.

Even bigger deal - if you need to cancel or change your reservation, the owner might not allow any changes. Or their points might not be able to be used for a change that you want or need. So you might be out your entire deposit or any money you have already paid the member. Disney does not get involved with DVC reservation rentals at all. So if you have any problems, it's between you and the owner. You cannot call Member Services for any reason. You can call the resort about three or four days before the start of your reservation if you want to confirm it.

If you stay 10 nights, you'd get a full cleaning on day 4, trash removed and towels changed out on day 8. You only get four bath towels, two hand towels and four face cloths. No one makes the bed or anything else except for those days you get a full cleaning.

The refrigerator in a studio is bigger than the dorm sized cube refrigerator. It's an undercounter sized refrigerator.

If you want to do DME or DDP, you need to notify the member ahead of time and they notify Member Services.
