Let me tell you what we typically do. Are we going overboard with tipping? Is this too much....too little?

1. When we pull up in our van at the BWV, I give the guy that takes the van $5.00. Am I supposed to give this guy anything for taking the van? Should I only tip when they bring the van back to me?

2. There is always a guy that starts taking our luggage out of the van and loads it onto a cart. The room is never ready so our stuff goes into a holding pattern. We pay this guy $10.00. (We usually have around 10 bags)

3. When our room is ready, we call for our baggage from our room. We pay this guy that delivers it $10.00 also.

So by the time I get to my room, I'm out $25.00. Is this what everyone else does also?

Are there people out there that refuse to tip? One time in Wash DC a guy was horrible to us and our bags. He stuck his hand out expecting a tip and I didn't give him one. He made a scene so I gave him a few bucks. I guess I don't want to repeat that scenario so I tip even if the service stinks.

We tend to tip in the neighborhood of what you describe.

We've never gotten rotten service yet from valet or bell services. If we did, it would certainly affect the tip.

Sometimes, things happen out of their control (10 cars and an ME bus pull in at the same time) and the service level may suffer through no one's fault. So I wouldn't penalize someone for something like that.

But if they are rude or otherwise sloppy service, I'd give a minimal tip. Sometimes a small tip speaks louder than no tip. If no tip, they will probably assume that it's some jerk that never tips, and not understand that it was due to poor service.

By the way, I almost didn't open this thread. At first I thought you might be soliciting donations to help out your tipping fund!:lmao:

This situation is one of the reasons that the US mint doesn't simply eliminate the penny from circulation. ;)

Your tipping range sounds reasonable given your large number of bags. My general rule is $5 (minimum) or $1 per bag for more than 5 bags.

Do a web search on tipping and see for yourself. The industry standards are to tip on pick up of a vehicle and to tip at the final destination of the luggage. Each entity has a system to divide tips as applicable.

I have to agree. I tip when I get my vehicle back, not when I drop off. I tip when the bags are delivered to my room, not when they are taken out of the car.

I think most places do have systems for sharing tips. (Even in restaurants, I believe that waiters share their tips with others on the waitstaff...like bus boys).

I iwll usually Tip both ways with a car but few dollars each time as the person is usually different. With bags it is Final destination as from what I see if it is within the same shift it is the same person who handels your bags or at least all the times I have dropped my bags off and picked them up later or had them broght to my room. I guess if you would normally give 20 then 10 each way would work as well or you can split what you would normaly do.
I do not know if this all airports but there is now a fee for curb side check in like 2.00 per bag I wonder if you are suppose to tip on top :headache:
But the line in general is longer outside then in I guess people like paying for slower service :lmao:
