My DH is attempting to replace our garbage disposal.....by himself!

Our garbage disposal's motor went out and I suggested that we call the appropriately trained people to replace it for us but DH suggested that he could replace it himself.

I am concerned to put it mildly. DH is not a very handy type. I am afraid that I will be calling a plumber to come fix the mess that will soon be my kitchen sink!

I feel bad for not having more faith in my DH's abilities but that is just the way I feel.

***UPDATE***

Well I am at least spared for another night. DH does not have the proper tools for the job so he will have to go to Home Depot tomorrow to pick them up before he can get really started.

New Garbage Disposal $70
New Tools $150
Emergency Room Visit for DH $200
Emergency Plumbers Visit $250
New Kitchen Sink/Plumbing $500
Marriage Counseling $1000
A Working Garbage Disposal: Priceless (no thats not right it is more like $2170!!!)

I hear ya.
Note my tag to the left, lol.

Just keep your fingers crossed, I guess, hehe

Good Luck!:D

I understand where you are coming from. My DH is a carpenter/cabinet maker, but he is not an electrician or plumber. Thankfully he recognizes that he doesn't have the knowledge and is willing not to try it in those areas. I believe it is OK to admit that we are just not the appropriate ones to do certain things. I will be thinking of you and hopefully your DH will surprise you. Good Luck:D .

My DH didn't use to be handy around the house. His dad never taught him how to do things. He was able to replace our garbage disposal years ago when it went on the fritz. I felt the same way you did, when he started tearing everything apart. There are still some things I won't let him do. He isn't allowed to use power tools if I am not home. That is only because he tends to be accident prone.

Call the electrician AND the plummer!!!! My Dh was going to try to install one for a friend. Took a good look at the instructions and said there was no way with the electrical stuff involved that he could do it!!! I am so glad he would probably have electricuted himself!!!! He is ok at handy man stuff if it is BASIC!! BUt I love him!! Good Luck Becka!!

Oh boy, sounds like you're married to my husband! :teeth: Last month our sump pump quit working & the water was rising! You can't imagine what we have in our basement that we would have lost if it had flooded. Anyway, my DH decided to take on the project himself. He did call a friend & got some verbal instructions & then we went to the pump store together (so that I could hear the instructions as well, in case he forgot) & as soon as we got home, my husband was replacing the part that had broken. He not only took it apart, but he put it back together without any parts remaining on the basement floor! I was so proud! :teeth:

So give your DH some credit. My DH did a great job & he never even hung a picture frame until after we married. Hopefully your DH is a quick learn like mine is! Just think of the (Disney) money you'll save if your DH can take care of the garbage disposal!

Lots of luck & just in case, have a plumbers/electrician's number handy!

Good Luck!!! I will say a prayer for you just in case. I think I too would have a few numbers ready - JUST IN CASE !!!!
You just have to LOVE THEM, Don't ya?

That's what happened to my poor MIL! She went without a dishwasher for 15 years! I would've gone on strike.

ROFL!!!

You guys are too funny.

DH is all geared up for his trip to the Depot tonight after work. :p I hope this is all finished by tonight.

You still have time to call a repairman....:D

Boy this must be something with the male species, LOL.
My dh is a licensed plumber ( although he does not work as a plumber ) but he can basically do anything around the house, only one thing, you need to have ALL the right tools BEFORE you start. He tends to always need something he doesn't have and then leave the job unfinished until I finish it.
Let me tell you , I have learned to do almost everything in this house by myself just from watching him.
Good Luck Becka!;)

**UPDATE #2**

I am very proud of my DH. He only bought one $10 tool at Home Depot, came home and he had the new garbage disposal working in less than 1 hour. :) I guess I really did underestimate him.

I'm glad your still here Becka! Now does your dh have all his parts?;) :p

Somebody needs to apologizeeeeeeee, LOL.
