Please help me understand my points

I thought I had this system all figured out.
But, I don't.
Now, I'm trying to figure out how many points I can use and when.
Here's the deal. We bought a resale. Had 75 pts banked from 2003 on it. Used those to go to HHI.
Then, we had 150 , 2004 pts. Used a few of those for the HHI trip and banked the rest at 141.
Then, made a ressie for BWV on Oct. , but had to borrow from 2005 to make it. That took 84 pts. What I am trying to figure out is how many points we have that can be either used or rented out currently. My statement says 207, but I didn't think you could use the banked points until the next use year.
Our use year is Oct.
Hope I'm not confusing you guys, but I really hope there are some experts out there that can help me understand this.
Thanks in advance!

Your accounting is correct. You have 207 /05 use year points available to make a ressie for a stay anytime after 10/1/05.

The 141 points you banked into /05 are intact, and your 150 /05 points added to them minus the 84 points you borrowed from /05 equals 207.

Thanks so much. So, when I banked the points, that meant that I could not use them before Oct/05 but for any ressie after that date, I can. I was thinking I had to wait until Oct. before I could even make a reservation on the points I banked.

And, say if I use (or rent out) all of the 207 pts, do I borrow points from 2006 if I need them?
And, if I don't need them then, I just wait until Oct. 06 before I get my new 150?
I'm so sorry, but I am new to this and have really gotten confused. Thank you!!!

Sounds like you have a handle on it. Just remember that when your use year is has nothing to do with when you can make the reservation. The accounting is done by use year the reservation falls in, not by when the reservation is made.

Simple, the 207 points is correct.

First, understand how Use Year works. With an October UY, your vacation dates are like this:

Use Year.....Vacation Dates
2003.....Oct 1, 2003 through Sep 30, 2004
2004.....Oct 1, 2004 through Sep 30, 2005
2005.....Oct 1, 2005 through Sep 30, 2006
2006.....Oct 1, 2006 through Sep 30, 2007

You purchased a 150 point contract.
It had 73 2003 points that were banked.
This means your 2004 use year had 223 points in it.

Your HH trip required 84 points, so you used all 73 of the banked 2003 points, and 9 of your regular 2004 points. This left you with 141 2004 points.

You then banked the 141 points into Use Year 2005. That gave you 291 points in your 2005 Use Year (141 banked + 150 regular)

Finally, you made an October 2005 reservation. You'll see from the chart that Oct 2005 is within your 2005 Use Year. You did not borrow 2005 points for the reservation. You simply used 2005 points for the reservation.

Your October reservation required 84 points. To make it, MS should have taken those points from your banked 141 2004 points. This would leave you with a 2005 Use Year of 57 banked points, and all 150 of your regular 2005 points, for a total of 207 points.
Keep in mind those 57 banked points must be used sometime before Sep 2006. The 150 regular 2005 points can be used anytime before Sep 2006, or banked into Use Year 2006 and then used anytime before September 2007.

Hope this helps.

Diane, the reservation is for October which is in the 2005 use year so MS should have used the banked 2004 points first.

This means she should have 57 banked points remaining (not 141) and should have all 150 regular 2005 points remaining (not 66)

I think she used the term Borrowed 2005 points, incorrectly.

Unless she meant she took the Vacation in October 2004 and doesn't mean October 2005 like I read it. If that's the case then she did indeed borrow 2005 points, and you are correct that she has 141 banked points and 66 regular 2005 points left in her 2005 account.

OH, I think I'm getting it (somewhat). I was thinking that I had to wait until Oct 05 before I could even use those points for a reservation. As long as I make the reservation after that date, then that's OK??

So, now if I wanted to rent those 207 points I have left, and we decided later to take a trip in Oct. 06, how does that work? Is that when we would be borrowing?

I hope I am not the only one out there that is just so confused.

Aha! Yes, I was assuming she borrowed the points for last October.

Yes, you can make the reservation itself anytime up to 11 months ahead of your checkout date. The only thing that matters is that the points for the Use Year the reservation is in will be there at that time.

Thus, you can call today and make a reservation for October 2005, and use your 2005 Use Year points.

If you rent out all your remaining 2005 points then you have nothing left until your 2006 Use Year starts. If you wanted to take a vacation in October 2006 then you would simply reserve it, anytime up to 11-months ahead, and use your regular 2006 points. You would not be borrowing any points.

If you wanted to take a vacation, for example in August 2006, then you see that that date would be in your 2005 Use Year, and in that case you would indeed borrow from your 2006 Use Year Points.

Note you don't actually borrow points ahead of time. You only borrow at the time you actually make a reservation. If you wanted to go in August '06, you could call in September '05 to make the reservation, and when you did, MS would borrow your 2006 points as needed. (Assuming you had rented your 2005 points already. If not, then you obviously would use 2005 points for an August 2006 trip).

Hope it's beginning to make sense now.:)

I think you'll find the DVC-Planner and DVC-Chart program helpful. Keep in mind that I'm currently still working on my DVC-Tracker program, which I expect will go into beta tests later this summer. That program will be used to track your points. You may definitely want to make a note to check back later and download it when it's ready...:teeth:
