My husband and I would like to ride Expedition Everest, but our 9 yr old does not. How do we use child swap? Do you need to use a fast pass+ in order to do this or could we all three use standby and not waste fast passes?

You can go through the Standby line and get the Rider Swap pass. Rider #2 enters the FP line to ride on the Swap.

Or, 1 adult gets a FP, goes through the FP line to ride and Adult #2 rides on the Swap by entering the FP line.

So, if we all 3 wait 30 min in standby, and I ride, then my husband would have to go back to the end of the fast pass line and wait another 10 min or however long the fast pass wait is?

Yes. Adult #2 and your son don't have to wait through the complete Standby wait. #2 can meet your #1 at the ride entrance to "show" your son so that the Swap pass can be given to #1.

We usually have a just walk up to line CAst Member and tell them we would like to do child swap, they hand us a child swap ticket and one of us rides then, and then once they are done riding, the one of us that hasn't rode can then ride without waiting in long line again.
And if kids want to ride with each of you, they can so you don't miss the experience of riding with your kids who are old enough or tall enough... It allows both parents to ride with kids and kids get to ride twice...while the other parents stays with baby or kids who can't ride yet.

Thanks for the explanations! I think I have a good enough grasp on it now to make our plans. :disrocks:

I might be wrong but I thought you could only use child swap when a child was too young/short to ride. I'm not sure how it works when a child just doesn't want to ride, but technically can ride.
Rider Switch applies to any situation where one adult needs to wait with a group member who is too short or doesn't want to ride. It's explained on the Disney website if you search for Rider Switch.

Ok- thanks I was wrong then. I actually didn't need the info. I'll edit my post.

No problem. I think it just goes back to how, at least at DL, it was always known as Baby Swap. It's now "Rider Switch" as WDW - perhaps because of the wild coaster rides? ;)
