Please help me figure out the difference between

a mini dvd camcorder and a regular size one.
I feel very stupid asking these very basic and probably obviouse questions, but I need to know what I should look for.
Does the mini dvd camcorder record record videos with sound (like the old vhs ones that had the little tape)?
Do I have to run this through my computer, or can I record on the camera and play it through my dvd player?
