Please help me figure out Kindle

I'm thinking of getting my DH a Kindle for Christmas. Here are a few questions I have first...

1. What's the difference between the Fire and the other models? (Besides color.)

2. Do you have to pay a monthly fee for internet connection?

3. Can he write a journal on it when he travels and print it out at home? Is there an app for that for how is it best done? If nothing else he can just email it to himself one day at a time, right?

1. Fire is a tablet where you can download apps, stream movies and get on the internet through wifi. I agree it looks cool but I worry about any first generation item because it was just released around 11-15. The other models are specifically e-readers. The kindle keyboard had internet capabilities but I am not sure about the other models. I have the kindle keyboard for about one month now and love it.

2. No no monthly fee for any of the kindles. You only get 3g on the e-readers for purchasing books and doing very limited internet activity. The Fire is strictly wifi only.

3. Not sure on any model. I know the e-readers have editing capabilities but not sure how that works.

I definately want to get the Fire for DH. I hear people talking about the Nook, but trust that Amazon will stay in business longer.
So with Wifi, you can connect at home or hot spots, right? Usually for a charge at most hotels. That sounds fine.
Still interested to know how he can accomplish journal writing. Sounds like I will buy it for him regardless though.

The Nook is a Barnes and Noble product and B&N s not in any kind of trouble.

You should go to Best Buy and look at the products and talk to a sales person about the capabilities of the Fire.

There are several different apps that he could utilize for a journal. Go to the Amazon App store and search through Journal/Diary/Productivity (word processors etc) and see.

As for the difference between a "Kindle" and a "Kindle Fire" is the eInk Kindle devices are primarily designed to read books. They can be used to check email, play mp3 files (music and audiobooks) and play a few games but they primarily are meant for reading books. It is not backlit and if you want to read in low light conditions you need some sort of booklight or lamp. However, if you want to read outside in the sunlight - it is awesome.

The Kindle Fire is really more of an entertainment device. It can be used to read books, surf the internet, play movies (streaming such as Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime plus your own files), play music, play games etc etc. It has color screen that is back lit and much more visible in the dark. In bright sunlight, not so much.

The kndle 3g is on sale at Best buy today and our Target matches it and gives off the 10% for using their credit card. It is mainly a reading device. You can read your email on it (I've used it all over the place while on cruises) and it's free, however that part is clunky.

I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to use mine when I got it as a gift. I loved my books. Well, that's a thing of the past LOL! Most people who say they don't want one, haven't used it for very long..maybe looked at it and didn't realize all the ways you can read on it. It's perfect for those with eye problems, because unlike a computer, it's like reading a book. You do need a light if you are in the dark. You can make the letters much bigger or smaller. You can read it horizontal or vertical. It's light and can easily pop in your pocketbook or briefcase. It keeps track of where you are, lets you mark certain pages, and you can cerry all the books your little heart desires on a plane and it really keeps the weight down.

On a recent cruise my husband was teaching a 93 year old how to access his email, and showing his wife all it could do. They had them, but had no idea all it was capable of.

So, if you want something for reading, I strongly encourage you to get one. So far I have only had to pay for 2 books (The Help and the latest Daniell Steel) because everyday they add new books for a limited time to the free list. Can you tell I love mine?
