We are non AP locals looking to spend one night/two days this August. I had decided on Tues., 8/26- Wed. 8/27 thinking many would be back in school. Looking at the crowd calendars, it looks like the levels for the preceding week are lower. It appears local pass holders are not blocked either week, unless I am mistaken. Should I go the preceding week?

Thanks for any and all advice!

I think your dates are good. A lot of schools in CA are back in session, which will make for lighter crowds. In our experience, the later in August, the better (as long as it isn't too close to the holiday weekend).

We have gone in early August (2007) and twice at the end of August (2011, 2013). I like the seemingly lower crowds at the end of the month, but beware that parks are no longer on their summer schedules. Parks open an hour later during the week and certain rides close (HM and Matterhorn closed the Monday of the week before Labor Day both times). Fantasmic also is shown only on weekends. The parks are still full of visitors, especially us Oregonians who take advantage of Californian kids being back in school. We had a great vacation all 3 times.

Don't look at crowd calendars. They are worse than wrong. At least TP's is for DLR.

We always try to go the last week of August, right before Labor Day weekend. The crowds are not bad at all, with the exception of the Friday right before Labor Day. I always have RideMax but for the most part haven't even needed to use it during that time.

I'm just bummed because this year my DD14 starts a new school that starts back a week earlier -- so that week is out! You'll have a great time.
