There are 18 of us going to Disney in December this year and we are staying at the Polynesian. Originally we were going to go to the Luau but then people were getting nervous about it being outside and it could get cancelled for bad weather etc.

Then we started looking at HDDR and now we are thinking about going to see that show instead.

The ages of the kids will be 2,2,4,5,6,8,8,11

We cannot decide!! We will be on the deluxe dining plan but we are only going for 7 nights and don't feel like we should do both shows.

Which one should we do? Or should we do both? It would be easy to see the Luau because we are staying at the Poly but the HDDR looks like it might be more fun. :confused3

Thoughts?

we went to the Luau last week with a just turned 4 year old and a 5 year old......they were just zoning in on this whole show and loved the food too......We did ask for the hotdogs for the kids in case they didnt care for the luau fare.....but they ate both the dogs and the food.....we enjoyed it as well.

I'm sorry to ask this but, may I ask what is HDDR? please. And also I too have a ressie for 7 at the Luau. Is there a specific spot i should try requesting or is it 1st come first serve for those specific areas.? And my kids will be 7 when we go so I know they'll enjoy the show / meal at the luau, just not knowing what lurks behind this HDDR is intriguing me???

We have been to both.

The adults in our group liked the luau. Not 100% "wow"ed with the show because of the cheesiness. Both groups liked the HDDR - yes, its cheesy, but the actors do a better job pulling it up. food wise - luau food is great and better than the HDDR.

Have you thought about HDDR and Ohana's. HDDR for the show and fun. Ohana's for the food and fun (the kid games are so cute).

Good luck! Either way you'll have a fun time.

HDDR is the Hoop Dee Doo Musical Review located at Pioneer Hall (Fort Wilderness)

As for the Luau, they seat patrons based on when they made their reservation, the further out you secured a ressie, the better your seat will be than those folks that booked last minute. Hope that helps. :)

I vote for HDDR too!!! With all those kids....I think they would enjoy singing along...making noise with the spoons and washboards...my kids loved it!!!! Great Memories!!! Yummy Strawberry Shortcake!!! ...and I thought the show was lots of fun!!!

Also at the Luau, we had tier one. We were late in booking but were lucky enough to get the front tables. It is a wee bit more expensive but for the kids sake we were happy. It is based on three tiers.

Another vote for the Hoop, gone to the HHDR 4 times and the Luau 1 time and would go back to the Hoop before going back to the Luau. I think the Luau has to change the show, every thing but the firetwirler, then I would go back.

We did both during our trip last year. My kids are 9 and 6. The Luau seemed longer, don't know if it actually was. Honestly, the Luau was boring for the kids, until the fire twirler showed up at the end. By that time, the 6 yo was asleep. There were a lot of kids up in the common area dancing so they were clearly enjoying it. It you're using the DDP and can only get Cat. 2 or 3 seating, I'd skip it. We had Cat. 1 seating (paid OOP) and even with a front row seat, it got boring.

The HDDR was more fun, IMO. It was corny, but the performance moved quickly, as did the food and drinks.

We're going back to WDW next month and the kids specifically requested the HDDR again. If you time it right, you can take a horse drawn carriage ride around Fort Wilderness Campground. When we left the HDDR, we could've done this but regretably didn't.

Same thing goes for the HDDR...Earlier ADR get better tables ;)

We've been to the Luau once and the HDDR twice. I vote for the HDDR!

We've done the Luau and the Hoop De Doo and personally I prefer Hoop De Doo. I liked the food better and the entertainment is very interactive (great for kids).

I haven't done the Luau in 12 years, so I'm sure things have changed a lot. But when we did it, the food wasn't that great and the show was a snooze. I fell asleep. Now mind you, I was 16 years old, but even at 16, my tastes were more comparable to an adult's than a "typical" 16-year-old. So it wasn't because I was younger - my parents were also bored. I think the only thing I liked were the fire dancers, but they were very handsome, muscled men :lovestruc

We did HDDR in March, and I was afraid I wouldn't like it because I knew going in that it was corny. And it was. But the actors were wonderful, and I laughed SO hard... and I really liked the food! Plus, beer and wine are included, which was a plus!

I did a Dining Review, and here's a link to the post with HDDR: http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=36175390&postcount=12

I found the Luau to be long and boring with bland food. I would not waste $$$$ (or credits) on it again. The Hoop De Doo, on the other hand, was lots of fun and the food was very good. I would definitely do that again!!!!

I know I forgot to mention this above and I don't know see it mentioned above, but if the weather is bad they could cancel the Luau, so if you are using dining plan credits you may not find another place to use them.

I currently have ressies for luau but afterseeing all these reviews I'm thinking of changing it. Is the HDDR 2 or 1 credit s?

After all these reviews I now want to try BOTH. HDDR because it sounds fantastic and the Luau just to see what it is like!

Honestly, if it was totally up to me (and it is not, there are 17 other people to consider) we would be going to see La Nouba. ;)

HDDR is 2 credits for tier 2 and tier 3. I think you can get tier 1 with the dining credits for the later show. Good luck deciding! I'm sure we will have fun either way
