So now that the holidays sales are over, my DH has decided that we should get a new tv. :sad2: We currently have a 55" projection. We spent a ton on it and while there is nothing really wrong with it, he would like to upgrade. We looked at Sears, Best Buy, and Walmart. Sears IMO was really expensive or maybe nothing was really on sale. We want to stay under 1500.00. I would love to be closer to 1000.00. Even if it only on sale for that price but orginally higher. We would like to stay 46-47" or bigger. I know we want the better/newer one as I don't want to do this again anytime soon. (it is almost impossible to keep up w/ the progress of electronics) We've looked at 1080i and at least 120 hz. I'm trying to compare what we saw w/ the reviews online. Best buy did have one that was 47"? i think, 1080 and something like 460hz. I can't find that one on the site. Walmart seemed to have a better selection, however there is no one really to talk w/ their. They had a 55" vizio that wasn't too bad but it was next to a 52" sanyo, I think. The vizio's screen was lighter than all those around it/seemed a little faded? However, it has mostly good reviews. The Sanyo also has good reviews. Then I looked online at best buy. The Samsung brand seems to be the best, looked at a 52" that was too terrible. Then saw the LED ones. These are the first ones, is it even worth it to buy one of those? They probably don't have all the kinks worked out yet. If I can get one on sale for the price I need, I would consider it. Otherwise YIKES!!! So, I guess what I am looking for is someone that has a 'good' tv or knows of a good/reliable brand. And what else I should be looking for in a set. We will also be getting a sound system, looking at a sound bar. Thanks in Advance! :worship:

We just bought the Vizio 55" 120gh LCD this weekend for our new movie room. We already have a 50" Vizio in the living room for the past two years and love it.

The picture on it is awesome, I can't say enough good things. Regular price was a little over $1,500 but Walmart had it on sale for $1,298.

Good luck!

we just purches one of the smaller vizos for our son and it is a great little tv

and i just purchsed a 40 in apex thru target and have enjoyed the new tv also

i do know when we set up the vizo there are a few options for the color and one option asked if it was a display modle so that could be one reason why you notced the differnce in the two tvs

We bought our Westinghouse 1080p 47" LCD from Best Buy 2 years ago when prices were high. Ours isn't mounted so we bought a entertainment center too. We stood there at Best Buy for a hour or so comparing features and looking at pictures. This one had the best price. The picture is nice too.
The people there are really helpful. They don't work on commission and I think that helps. We also bought the warranty which we have never used. Knock on wood! Now the prices have come down so much you can get a great tv for a good price.

we have a 42" Vizio that is almost 2 years old and love it!! I just saw at Sams club that they have the Vizio sound bar for $247 and the sound is amazing...I am waiting for that to go on sale (hopefully)

Sam's Club has really good prices on their tvs. We are looking at buying the 47 inch Vizio 1080p 120hz for $897 in the next week. We have looked around at other places and their prices just can't compare. Sams has a really good return policy so if for some reason the picture doesn't look good in our home we could always return, don't think that will happen though. We have a Vizio now and it works great. Vizios get really good reviews also.

One thing we tell ourselves when looking at the "better" screens in the store is that of course one will look better than the next when they are right next to each other, but once you are looking at "yours" you can't tell the difference. I used this same theory when looking for my diamond engagement ring, and saved tons of money because who is really going to look at the ring under a microscope anyways! Hope you find a good tv that fits what you are looking for.

Sam's is where to buy we will never buy an expensive TV anywhere else again.

They guarantee the TV for 6 months if anything goes wrong with it within that 6 month period just bring it back to the store and they will give you a brand new TV.

We bought a 42 in Vizio and at about 3 months we got a dead pixel, took it back got a brand new 42 in Vizio and $100 cash back! The TV had gone down in price since we purchased it.

We love our Vizio.

Definitely check Costco too for their Vizio TVs.

I love my Vizio37 inch to. The sound awesome is awesome it. I love watching movies on it. I looking for now media/home office. It will be another Vizio for sure.

I probably buy it from either Wal-mart or Sam's Club.

I have 3 Samsungs, 32, 40 and 52 inch, and they are all fantastic! We tried a Sony 40 inch, and ended up returning it for the Samsung.

As the weeks approach Super Bowl Sunday (the first weekend in Feb this year), then you'll start seeing more deals on televisions again.

If you could hold out another year, I'd wait and get an LED tv!!

what is the model on the 52"? We are looking at a 52" samsung. It is on sale 1399. I'm wondering if the price will drop more around the superbowl? I don't know if we should go ahead and get a 120 hz or hold out for a higher one? We watch movies all the time, and play games on the wii.

Also we want to wall mount but the mounts at best buy are kind of high. I'm wondering if it really matters where you buy the mount from as long as it fit the tv? With 2 little ones, we really dont' want to put it on a stand.

My 52 inch is a year old so it's not made anymore, but this is the one we have...I'm sure there is an equivalent 52 inch in the 6 series now that is just as good or even better...

I would highly recommend the Vizio. We have had a 37" for 3 years and a 42" for about 6 months and LOVE both. The light or faded screen was probably just a matter of settings that can be adjusted to your needs. We have bought ours at Sam's on the clearance rack (the 37 was a display that was probably on for 3 months straight!) and the 42 was a opened/returned box and we still have not had any problems with either.

I would go with the Samsung, but have you thought about a HD projector and screen?

If you have the room it's the way to go. You can also use your projector for outdoor movie nights. My outdoor screen is 225 inch. Everyone loves movie nights.

the new Samsungs are awesome! We have been thinking of moving our 42" vizio to the masterbedroom and getting a Vizio LED. Will probably wait a year so prices drop a bit.

I would avoid an LED screen for now - too new, and they are not truly an LED screen, they are LCD screens illuminated by LEDs on the sides, etc. so the whole LED thing is more a marketing ploy than anything and they are way more expensive than other LCDs.

You want at least 1080p, at least 120hz. Ignore contrast ratio because there is no industry standard for measuring contrast ratio - the companies can make up whatever they want (and they do).

Don't buy any HDMI cable that costs more than $6 - order them from www.monoprice.com and save yourself a lot of money. The big stores will try to sell you a $100 Monster HDMI cable. It's shameful. Biggest ripoff in electronics today.

I don't find Sears to have good prices. Best Buy only if you can catch a sale.

If you have an HH Gregg near you, they are often the best bet. HH Gregg has been very good to our family and many friends over the years and they will price match if you can find the same item online.

If you don't already have one, definitely get a decent Blu-ray player (not one of the el cheapo $78 Walmart specials, but if you find a better one on sale for $99 those are fine - look for extra features like Netflix streaming, Pandora, etc.) And if you don't have surround sound I'd highly recommend a combo Blu-ray Home Theater in a Box. We love our LG LHB953 5.1 system (and our LG LH40 tv, too).
