Please explain walking like I am 5 years old

Question for the "walkers" - did it ever occur to you to just pick a different date for your trip?

Not a fan, not doing it.

I dont always walk, but when I do its because I have to have that date. IE: my current walk. I won tickets to DLR. The tickes expire the week after the days I walked. If I dont go then, then I dont go at all.

My other walks have been for birthdays, we don't do lets go a cheaper more reasonable time of year and call it a birthday trip, we go on the birth date taking place.

I hate walking, but I definitely understand the need to do it if you absolutely require a specific date and you are booking at a place where everyone else is also walking. I would probably do the same, but I would hate every minute of it. If there were a nice clean way for DVC to address it without harming the product as a whole, I would be all for it. To all the newbies here, I would strongly encourage you to try to enjoy the product without walking. It’s much simpler and more often than not walking is unnecessary.

Anyone who wants to go for the holidays, due to high demand time, are going to run into difficulty.

So, even if people have flexibility of dates, one would have to go a completely different time of year to avoid this specific situation.

I did it a few times and no longer do. I go with PV rooms and then waitlist and stalk to get the better views.

Have gotten lucky too with getting it first try. But, I don’t fault anyone who is doing it.

It’s all about supply and demand. Walk starts when demand lower. Ends at a period demand is higher.

No desire to pick another date. I tend to pick a time when points use is lower. Choose a very popular DVC time of year. Go for, at times, a category focused on by the masses. (i.e. Studio).

I have had lots of reservations in my time owning DVC, I think I have walked 3 times. The most recent time I didn't need to it turns out, but I did it just to cover myself since so many people do it.

How did you lose a night ? I’m walking a 4 night reservation currently and I feel like I’m going to f*ck it up any time I modify
I had a 3-night studio room booked. Next morning at 8:00 am Eastern time on the dot, I went to modify the reservation and move the 3-nights forward by 1 day and 1-2 of the nights were no longer available.

So right now, I've managed to get 2 nights in a 1 BR at GCH for 8/5-8/7, but what I really want is 3 nights in a GCH studio 8/10-8/13. I'd settle for 3 nights in a GCH studio 8/5-8/8 and I put in a waitlist request for that.

Basically somebody else either clicked the button faster than I did and/or somebody who owns at GCH (i.e., GCH is their home resort) went in the day before to snag those nights.

VGC is very very hard, tbh I am shocked you got 2 nights in a studio.

Yup, agreed! :-)

This is why I have a backup reservation of 4 nights at a Best Western on Harbor Blvd just in case I end up with nothing.
The good news is WL do come through there so fingers crossed you will get it! If not I would possibly consider a split stay. No ideal but at least you will be at VGC for some of the time.

This is the more likely explanation. Walking a non-home reservation at 7 months is always at risk of being stopped by an owner, because they can book farther ahead.
What I've been doing MOST of the time while I'm trying to walk this reservation is check availability about 10 min before "go time." I did that on that particular morning and saw that 2 of the nights suddenly had no availability. But I tried anyway when the clock hit 8:00 am Eastern because I thought, "Eh, no harm in trying and maybe a GCH owner is walking their reservation, too."

Hopefully someone is walking and will walk past, and you’ll be able to get your nights by WL or stalking.

My HOPE is to get either 2 or 3 nights at GCH the week of 8/10 with the stay ending on Thurs 8/13, then we'd switch to Best Western for 8/13-8/15 so we can go to the D23 convention on either Fri or Sat (probably Fri)...then Reagan presidential library on Sat, stay w/friends Sat night ~ 1 hr from Disneyland and drive home Sunday.

Then later the following week, we are moving both of our kids into dorms at college (1 junior, 1 freshman)!
:-)

What I might also do instead of the 3-night GCH waitlist is hope for a 2-night stay in a studio & then do a waitlist for ONE night. I think the odds of getting a wait list filled for 1 night are much better than a 3-night request.

Feels a little bit like the Hunger Games! :rotfl2:

Sounds like a fun time! Except when kids grow up thats a tough one but still great none the less.

The plus side of my kids both being college students next school year is that we can actually GO to the D23 convention. Haven't ever gone because the dates never work out with their school schedule (our school year always began in early August). But this time? Yeah, we can actually go to the convention for the first time ever.
