Please Explain The Lockers

I am THRILLED to be going to Universal for the first time after being a strictly Disney gal. But I have a million ??'s. I heard that some rides you can't take your items on. But they let you put them in a locker during your ride. This is free right? Do these lock? I have a really nice camera that I wouldn't want stolen. Is this only for hotel guests?

any park guest may use the lockers. no charge on the lockers for required ride users.

There is also a CM nearby at all times plus they have the lockers under video surveillance. I feel comfortable using them.
