I just made the huge mistake of logging in to check my 401K. It tanked 20% this week. Ugh :scared1:

My wife and I both cashed in our 401ks three years ago and put it into our house. The value of the house will go up or down, but at least we still have it.

Hopefully you were 59 1/2 when you touched that 401K or else those penalties must have hurt.

I have a friend who looked at hers and wanted me to look at mine. I told her no way. She was close to retirement, but she told me it looks like she will be working until shes 80!

I heard someone say yesterday that their 401k is now a 201k! Mine sure is!

Plus I have a stock grant that vests in Janaury and the way things are going, it's going to take 100% of the grant to pay the taxes I'll owe on the grant.

I'm very thankful when I left my company last year I didn't choose to roll it over into the 401k for my new employer.
I dumped it into a money-market IRA. Phew.

I had to look last week so I could update Quicken for the 3rd quarter. I don't even want to know how much it's dropped since then. I just keep telling myself that we don't need it for another 30 years, and that this is a good thing for us long term (stocks are cheap so we're getting more "bang" for our 401k buck) but it's hard sometimes. Those nearing or already retired must be pulling their hair out!!!

My 401K has lost over a quarter of it's value since my last statement. I think I am gonna cry.

This is why I just open my mail, hole punch it and put it in the binder without ever looking at it. It's bound to go up at some point, it can't stay down forever.

We have an mutual fund for DS' education and I've been itching to look at it but so far I've resisted. I'm going to do my best to ignore it for a while.

I must have had ESP because I moved our 401K funds into low risk about a year ago. It's down but not by much. OTH, I also have a pension fund that I have no control over where it's invested. That's down about 15 percent since the beginning of the year.

Buckle up and put on yer helmets.

But be prepared for the eventual upswing and IMO, it's going to be steep. Up that is. History shows it is.

You know, I almost did the same thing last year. I'm kicking myself now. Oh well, it's not a loss until you sell it, I guess. And it WILL go back up, someday.

I don't want to know. I am blindly carrying on with my everyday life as if nothing has happened. There is nothing I can do about it, so I'm just trying not to worry. If I were in my 20s or 30s, it would be no big deal. Sadly, it is a huge deal to me. Oh well, I am still better off than many people. I'm just counting my blessings and letting the chips fall where they may.

Feralpeg, this is my story, too.

I haven't looked..I'm afraid it's ALL gone.

Y'all, don't forget to enjoy your daily Starbucks!! (guess where some of my stock is!) Keep drinking!!

If you are in your 50's and plan to work into your 60's don't sweat it. It will come back and better.

I have gone thru several of these. The good part is if your 401-k is buying stock it will buy even more. It is called cost averaging.

Statistically, if you have a five year time line you will come out OK.

If you are in the market short term you have no business to be there. Your odds are the same as Vegas. At least there you are entertained.

Long term you are ahead 99% of the time.
