Please don't think I'm un-greatful,but...

Chatty,
Just remember, if you don't wont to get dressed up or be waited on there is the buffet. If you do, there's the dinners. My first Disney (2nd cruise overall) in March, the wait staff isn't pushy. (My first cruise they were). They reminded me of the staff in the restaurants in WDW. Don't want to sign up for excursions. Don't. You can always go it alone. I did a few times on my first cruise, just hired a cab and said give us the tour. I used the at sea days to catch my breath and enjoy the classes on board while my friends hung around the pool. Just relax and have fun. You could very well become addicted.

This September a 3 day --surprise for the kids
This November, 4 day--introducing my parents to cruising (also ppl who said they would NEVER EVER cruise)
May, 2004--a 7 day western
Dec, 2004, the 10 day Christmas cruise.

So, within 1 yrs time I went from "I'll never cruise" to "when's our next cruise????" :)

That's my experience, YMMV. :)

Ohhhh, I am so proud of you! You have joined "the few, the proud, the Cruise addicts"!

All I can say is GO. I started out the same as many DH's did:

(with hands folded over chest, as if my opinion was important) "I think it's stupid to dress up for dinner while I'm on vacation."
"What am I going to do? I don't like shows. Those are for kids."
"What? No casino on board? Boooo-rrrrring!"
"I dont want to pay all that for a cruise and have you seasick the whole time."
"Think of all the extra time we could spend at the parks if we don't go on this cruise."
"Why would I go on a cruise? I'm not currently in the market to pick up women."

That last one was the result of a brain freeze and resulted in a discussion with the DW that I will not soon forget. If I'd have only left out currently... geeeez! What an idiot!

Well, to quote ohiominnie ...

Now, fast forward to disembarkation.

Yep, that's right. "Fast forward" describes it perfectly. We weren't even out of the terminal yet and I was whispering to the DW about going on the 7-day cruise next July. So, now we're cruising July 31st and staying only one day in Orlando.

That's the only danger in all this. You may find yourself changing future vacations in ways you never imagined!

I wasn't the original poster, but nothing anyone has said - no matter how positive - has made me even want to consider going on a cruise! I guess that's why there are so many ways and places to vacation - to each his/her own!

So....out of curiosity. Why are you hanging out on the cruise board if you have no intention of cruising?

???This is just a guess ohiominnie, but I think this thread may have been moved from another board which missypie originally replied. ???

You're right! The thread was moved from the WDW Trip Planning Forum. And once I started reading the posts I wondered if anyone would be able to change my untested, preconceived notions about cruises.

Yes, this thread was definitely moved from another board -- I can't recall which but you could probably find it -- it was theme parks, resorts, transportation, or DVC.

ohiominnie -- your enthusiasm is contagious! I would like to do the 3-day again this year, and so would the boys, but buying into DVC has depleted our funds. Actually I'd like to do the 4-day but that doesn't work well with DVC, as you have weekends before and after!

Unlike some, I am happy to pay extra for a cruise that *doesn't* have a casino!

Hi this thread was originally on the Disney Resorts Trip Report Board before it was moved :)

Ah, got it!

erikthewise, I think we've talked before. Come join us on a cruise....use your points. :) MIL got the Sept 25th cruise on "sale" through DVC. Her room was (I believe) 7 or 8 points less than the chart said it would be.

Chatty - Hi Neighbor!!! This time last year I had no desire to be on a cruise ship. I love WDW and couldn't understand how people would give up precious WDW time to get on a "boat" - BORING!!!!!!!!!! Ok, Aug 2002 came and we had extra DVC points and they announced a DVC cruise. DH really wanted to go, so I figured it was only 4 days and I could handle it. I did get 3 days at WDW out of it too!!!!! After hanging out here on the dis boards and catching everyone's excitement, I started to get excited too - well, it was a nervous excitement. I'm not a water person at all. Fast forward to our 1st cruise - February 2003 - we had a great time. We had so much to do that it wasn't until we got home that we realized that we didn't even use the pools on board! I even snorkeled on Castaway Cay - 1st time for doing that too! We had sooooo much fun.

By Monday morning I was wishing that the cruise was a 7 day. We ordered room service and ate our breakfast on our verandah while we were docking at Castaway Cay. That's a life I could get use to.

Our excitement must have been contagious, because we changed our 7 day WDW trip in September into another 4 day cruise (with some days at WDW when we get back). We now have 13 members of our family going and 4 of them have never been on a cruise. My sister who is petrified of being on a ship is even going after hearing us talk about all the fun we had.

I hope everything works out for you. If you try it and don't like it at least you will know now for sure, but at least you tried it. Dont' be surprised if you get addicted to cruising.

Gail

I think the reputation of the Disney Cruise Line Forum has made it just a great and fun place to post whether you have cruised, are planning to cruise or are just considering it!

I mean, look what wonderful people post here! Upbeat, happy, positive people with great outlooks on life who share their information easily, readily and are always there to give a hand!

Personally, I can't think of a better place to "chat"!!!!

Chatty, I am going on a Disney cruise next May, my first cruise. I am very nervous about it as I have always been afraid of being on a boat out at sea. (Lost on a siteseeing tour when I was a kid and nope Gilligan wasn't with me.) Anyway......I am also not good at change in food and drink because I have colitis, but I figured what the heck. I am going to overcome my fear and listen to all the knowledgable people on these boards, learn everything I can and relax and enjoy the cruise. That is why we are only taking a four day one the first time. If I have a problem with it, it's only four days long. We will then do our thing at the DIsney parks. I could never do the cruise without then going to the parks to get my fix! ;) If you can, try going to the parks after your cruise or before. I opted after because to me right now, Disney World is my favorite. Who knows after my first cruise though......I hear they are very addicting!! Good luck! Lynn

Lynn, I am hoping that we get "lost at sea" sometime. I don't ever want to come off the ship!

Rae

Rae, you are shooting for the three year tour instead of the three hour tour!!! : ) Hey I once saw a story on tv about this woman that lives on the QE2 I believe it was. She actually had her own little suite. I would imagine it would be expensive but hey maybe if you ask Disney, they'll give you a bust!! You'd be a great Ambassador! Lynn : ):D

Sometimes even the Theme Park chat here on DIS can send me running back to Cruise Forum faster than you can say Jack Rabbit.

I read an article about her. She's like a legend on the ship now. Wow, what a life! To live on a cruise ship. I wonder if she still has to go to the life boat drill every time!

They also have some cruise ships that are condos - either time share or full time ownership. I've read some of those documents for wealthy clients...they say "You pay us $$$$$$$ - we MAY build a cruise ship...."

I have always wanted to do a cruise vacation but could never convince my family to go. Well, back in '95 or '96 when DCL announced plans to build a cruise ship I knew I had to be on it. I wanted to be one of the first to experience cruising, especially with Disney. The Disney name is what sold my family. We have always done WDW vacations and must have been there at least 30 times staying at the various resorts on site.

Well, DCL actually held a lottery for reservations for the Maiden Voyage of the Magic back in '98. We were lucky enough to be picked to sail...had to put down $250 each (family of five) 2 years ahead of time without knowing how many days the cruise was or what the itinerary was. We were going on blind faith. The actual date the ship sailed had to be moved twice because she was not ready, but we were on her for her 1st passenger sailing on 7/29/98!!!

My family was hooked!!! We just finished our 8th DCL cruise this past May. Take it from die-hard WDW fans....we actually prefer cruising to the parks...don't get me wrong....we still love going to the parks and staying at the resorts but the cruise is very special and a great way to relax Disney style!!!

Go and enjoy...give it a try and keep your mind open. You will love it!!!

Feel free to check out our most recent trip pictures. As you can see my teens are smiling all the time. Sailing on DCL always seems to be our best family vacations!!! My teens are 19, 18 and 15 and still love going with the family on the cruise because they have so much freedom but can still spend some family time together!!!

I enjoyed looking at your pictures. You seemed to have a wonderful time. I haven't cruised on the Disney Line (yet), but I love cruising.
