There was no lip by the shower and it was quite large, so maybe the Handicapped Rooms are bigger at the Value Resorts so that might be why she had seen more during that time period.

I think I read recently that POP has several different designs of accessible rooms to cater to a variety of disabilities. But no, the rooms are NOT any larger than the All Stars - all are 260 square feet.

Still, I contend it's not anybody's business what any other person's financial situation is.
If you had asked, "Why does it appear so many Guests in wheelchairs stay at POP Century?" and stopped there, your question would probably not seem as offensive or intrusives. And I or somebody else would probably have recalled the different designs sooner.

A comment and a question:
Comment: It may be possible that POP is the MOST accessible because it is the newest resort. I know that all the resorts have to follow the law and be technically accessible, but POP may be better thought out because it was built post-ADA instead of retrofitted. I bet that at POP, every single entrance to every single place is accessible, whereas older buildings may have more out of the way or inconvenient accomodations.

Example: I was just walking in downtown Dallas to a meeting. The building (dating from about 1980) I entered had about 8 steps down to the entrance. There was a big sign, "Handicapped entrance on Elm Steet." It was a huge building and it would be a big pain to have to get yourself all the way to the opposite of the building to get in. The building is in technical compliance by having a way in - but it is a pain in the butt way in. A newer building would not have the steps down at ANY entrance.

Question: I wonder if all of the resorts have the same ratio of accessible rooms. I'm sure they all have whatever ratio the law requires, but I wonder if some (again, perhaps the newer hotels) go "above and beyond."

We met the biggest Disney fan on the boat from MK to the Polynesian, he started the conversation by telling me 'He was bitten by a mouse' I wish I could remember his name!
Anyway, he was also telling me his wife is in a wheelchair and they stay at the Polynesian because the rooms are a little larger and she can maneuver her chair easier. He also said he had stayed at all the Resorts at one time or another.
Doesn't really answer your question but interesting anyway.

Thanks guys! I didn't know much about HA rooms at PC. Wow! I'm learning a lot.

It's a matter of size, not finances. You'd have a bigger chance of seeing more wheelchairs at Pop/values because there are simply more people. They are WAY bigger than the other resorts. Pop has something like 1900 rooms - and it's only half finished. The deluxes are from a third to a half the number of rooms, or even less.

It's too late, we already think you're a jerk.

maybe they are staying at that hotel because it is their favorite one!!

Ok, I think I have officially heard everything.

I am a paraplegic, have been since age 6. The only places I have stayed are moderates (CSR and POR- back when it was Dixie Landings). I stay there because I like them and enjoy the atmosphere.

Sorry, but I think you are coming off as a jerk. Why were there so many people in wheelchairs at Pop? Does it really matter? Maybe while you were there it was just busy. Staying at the values because of added expenses? PLEASE! I don't have any more expenses than your average Joe Blow. We save our money and stay at the moderates.

Sorry, but this is igorance in it's truest form.

*sarcasm on* Oh by the way, here at the home they do let us crippled folks use the internet and we can answer questions for ourselves, so no need to ask if anyone has ever traveled w/ someone disabled. They do let us outside of the home to go to places like WDW and we post about our experiences. *sarcasm off*

Isn't this a bit harsh? The OP asked a valid question, I think. Maybe it could have been phrased more concisely, but I think that has been addressed already. It may be a hot button issue, but a person's not a jerk merely for bringing it up.

It could have been addressed a LOT more diplomatically. The guy probably isn't a jerk, but he came off like one, at least to me.

No comment about the validity of this question.

I will however report on an experience I had today. I work with a lady who is handicapped. She can walk and gets around OK but because of her disability she has to use a handicapped shower. I asked her today what hotel they stayed at when they went to Disney in 2003 (not because of her disability, but because I'm trying to figure out which resort to stay at). She went with DH and her two kids and they stayed at All Stars Music. Here's the KICKER...... she said when they arrived the CM told her she had two adjoining rooms. It turns out the only Handicapped room they had available was a room w/ a king bed, which wouldn't accomodate all 4 of them so they got two rooms at no additional cost. She said she was very impressed with the way Disney took care of them.

Wow! Some of you folks need to lighten up a little. Perhaps a little "desensitivity" training is in order. It was a harmless question and some of you choose to read more into it than the OP intended. Take another "ugly" pill and log back in tomorrow...........

Why does anybody chose the resort they stay in, regardless of their financial or health situation? There are wealthy people that stay at value resorts and people that go intocredit card debt to stay in a deluxe and everything in between. I think it was a matter of personal choice, not their health status.

Your question is very immature and a bit odd......sorry.

You probably saw more because the resort is MUCH larger and unlike a lot of the mods at POP there is only one bus stop. We used to stay at CBR with my ECV and you wouldn't notice it as much as each "island" had their own bus stop. You don't see it as much at the other resorts either because there are alternate modes of transportation.

I have an ECV and I have stayed a lot of places...and yes where I stay depends on how much I've spent on medical bills that year...OR how many times I plan on going that year. I will go every year even if I have to stay at a value...it is my treat for making it through another year of crappy treatments which no one knows if they really help.

This was a harmless question...I don't see why everyone gets so touchy about it.

Here here. Thanks for the common sense reading of the OP's intentions.

I read it as implying disabled people have higher expenses, not lower income.
That was my thought exactly. I can't really understand why some people are getting so bent out of shape by the question. :confused3 Sometimes we all have questions that are quirky but I honestly don't think there was any malice or disrespect intended.
Everybody kiss and make up! :love2:

Thank you. And by the way, I'm not a guy. When I wrote this question, I didn't really know how to ask it and like I said I'm a people watcher so I kinda wanted to get people's opinion (particularly those who use wheelchairs) to answer the question. Sorry if I didn't phrase it well, and I didn't expect people to think that I was only asking those who go to WDW with disabled persons. Like I mentioned before, I was thinking a particular question and was typing so fast I didn't include those who I should be asking the question to. I didn't expect people to jump down my throat about it but it was just a question that had been in my mind for sometime. I could really care less about people' s finances I just wanted to know what wheelchair users reasons for going to Pop. I know people could go anywhere they want, but I kinda thought they appeared underrepresented at the other resorts. I was quite curious as to why this appeared to be the case, no harm or ribbing intended. I figured since this is a board that answers curious people's questions, I'd ask away. I spent close to 20 minutes choosing my words carefully before I posted hoping not to get flamed but now that I see the results, I could have phrased it any way and get the same response. When I go to the resorts, I often wonder, "Why did this person come here? What do they like about this resort that keeps bringing them back?" Sometimes I get to talk to people and find out why they like coming to Disney and why they chose a certain resort. It's sometimes a great way to start a conversation. I usually ask many people this question not just those using wheelchairs. :)

By the way, I asked this same question on another board and got totally different answers, no flames. I actually learned more about Pop Century because I got answers from wheelchair users who explained why they felt Pop Century was a great choice for them. Now I am in a better position to recommend PC as a great choice for wheelchair users. I guess many people thought I was being a troll, but I feel in order to learn something I had to ask first. All it takes is one person with a negative comment, and the rest follow suit. Thanks to all who understood my question.

Just wondering why you would be staying in a value resort , instead of a deluxe resort, is it because of the cost ? Only asked because I noticed alot of people in line at the Pop Century were not in wheelchairs and waiting in line for the bus, was that you ? I love to people watch and never really see people with S.C. T-Shirts on at the deluxe resorts ? Is it because S.C. cost of living is so high, you just don't have the funds to stay somewhere more expensive ? It was neat to see two people with S.C. T-Shirts get on the same bus I was on, the bus driver was so good to them, made sure they were seated safely before driving off, even though they were rude to him. Why is it more S.C. ,Charleston especially, stay at values instead of deluxe resorts, bless your hearts, just curious ?

There are so many things I want to ask but I am like you and think I may come off differently than I meant.
Don't worry about the criticism, I noticed the same thing.
