I know I'm gonna get it for asking this, but here it goes anyway.

For the upcoming S.S. Member Cruise, can I make reservations for someone else? I know, I know... it's for members, but if I am giving my place to someone else, what's the difference?

The surgeon I work for has been trying to take his family on another Disney cruise and it's all booked up. I've discussed DVC with him and I can't seem to get him to understand all that is included with this wonderful ownership. When told him about the cruise he said "Man, I should have signed up for this considering how much I go to Disney" - I said "DUH! That's whay I've been telling you!". This would be a win-win situation.

Is this major taboo or what?

Gee, what if everyone on the cruise did what you're suggesting -- would it even be considered a member cruise?? I'd be very unhappy if I found out I could not get a reservation for me, DH, and DS because of these types of tactics!!!

I don't think MS will allow this as the cruise is expected to sell out very quickly, but no one here can say for sure. Call MS and ask.

Thanks RuthnPaul for being so "gentle"

I know what you mean about "if we all did that", but I would hardly call them "tactics". This is why I asked. I just wanted to get a general feeling from other DVCer's.

Thank you Carol for pointing out that MS might not allow it, that's an excellent point. I will call them and see what they say.

D4D

OK - I'm a little cinged, any more?

I'd call MS and see what they have to say. If they will allow you to make a reservation in someone else's name, then go for it.

Personally, I don't have a problem with it at all. The reality is, the vast majority of people who would use points for a cruise are going to use them for themselves.

Making a reservation with points for someone else instead of yourself isn't a tactic.

Ducky, they are your points...do whatever you please with them. I think it's kind of you to think of your boss.

D4D, didn't mean to offend you with my answer. But I still feel that this should be for members only! But, as Carol states, call MS to get the definitive answer. At first, we had considered taking my 2 brothers and a sister-in-law but decided not to because it would take space away from other members -- but, hey, if it's allowed, then I will be reconsidering my decision...

Hey, Ducky!

No flames here - let MS make the call.

One thought - the DVC Member Cruise is more expensive than the same cruise that isn't a DVC MC. Unless your surgeon/boss is really geeked about being with a whole bunch of DVC members, had you thought about booking a Disney Cruise for them at another time?

I wouldn't care - you can have my spot! Plus, if I found out that my table mate (or whatever) wasn't a member I wouldn't be upset either. But perhaps you should take into consideration that others might make your boss feel less than welcome - I think it is the little things that turn a great trip into an okay one... kind of you to think of him, but I might choose another date for him.

Personally I would like to see the spots go only to Members. I know the last cruise sold out fast and I would like to see every available spot be open to members. As Dr. T pointed out you can use your points for other cruises and actually use less points.

I really appreciate all the honest opinions and advice. I do understand that this is for members, and that's the whole point. I don't want to "rock the boat" no pun intended, I just wanted to help out a friend who has been looking to go on a Disney cruise.

And that's cool, it's nice to see people who use their points for others. :)

I seem to remember that the first name on the cabin (the person making the reservation) had to be a member. I could be wrong, and give the same advice as others, call up Member Services to be sure.

Just book them with your points, LOL. I doubt MS will allow you to book someone who's not a member, especially if you are not going as well.

I'm not going to flame you, just try to make you look at the situation from a member who has never been able to go on a cruise or attend any member homecoming event.

I've been a DVC member since 2000. Every time a member homecoming event was announced, we always had our points already booked for other trips. But, due to buying more points and more advance notice of the event, we are able to make the member cruise. I'm concerned that I won't be able to get ressies as it is, with just members trying to get on. If people start making ressies for non-DVC members, then it will definitely hurt the members' chances. Remember, there was a waitlist for the last cruise because there were more members wanting to go than the ship could handle.

I think it's very nice to try to do something for your boss, but there are four cruises every week all year long to choose from (3 day, 4 day, and two 7 day). I would think your boss would feel more comfortable on another cruise anyway. From what I've read, there are alot of activities that are geared for members. He may not get a feel for what a "normal" Disney cruise is like.

Besides, do you really want to send him off on a cruise during hurricane season???;)

That it would be nice to see a members cruise be used for members only, however...
On the other hand, they are my points, and I should be allowed to use them any way I choose.
I paid for my points just as everyone else did, and I don't see why I shouldn't be able to reserve a spot for friends or other family members.
My vote goes towards allowing this as long as I am not reserving more than one cabin. (And not sellilng my points for income purposes as a few on this board do)
P.S. Ducky4Disney,
It's nice to see another person from DE on the boards!

No flames here. I think it's a nice gesture, but..... I'm just wondering if your boss is going to feel out of place, since they are not members. I'd hate for him to feel odd, and heaven forbid someone would make him feel unwelcomed, he would never want to join. I think if it were me, I'd rather be on a "regular" cruise, and not a members only where I might not feel like I belong. JMHO

What about if you want to book the cruise for yourself and another person who is NOT a member staying in the same cabin? I really want to go on the cruise and would like to take my sister. Do you think MS will allow that?

In my honest opinion, since the cruise is advertised as a Members Cruise, I think it should be Members only and their guests who go. And to the previous posters point - I do think it is fine for them to have non-DVC owners as guests in their cabins with them.

MaryJ - I think that would be fine. I remember on the last cruise that someone who was a member booked a cabin and then brought their Mother along. I don't think Mom was a DVC member (she could have been) and they had a great time. I think your case is a little different than someone wanting to book a cabin for a non member.
