Please don't ever tell me there's no such thing as anxiety again.

:furious:

Yes, this is what my family doctor told me yesterday. :headache: I take 1 MG Ativan as needed, which usually ends up about maybe 1-2 pills every four months. I told the family physician I needed a small refill because the last prescription expired without using it. He then mumbles and grumbles and says something like, well aren't you seeing a therapist? If you're seeing a therapist there should be no anxiety. There's no such thing as anxiety.
Yes, I do see a therapist. But just because you see one doesn't mean the anxiety you've had for 2 years magically goes away.

I was starting to get pissed and my mom was floored, he's never made a comment like that. I think my mom understands why I could never stand the guy, I've never liked him.
I was just peeved because if there's no such thing as anxiety or I'm too young to have it, what the heck are the millions of other people battling then?! :sad2:

Ugh.
That guy sounds like a real jerk.

Psychological problems are very real, and if you're the one facing them, it just hurts to hear that from a trusted physician, I'm sure.

That would really make me mad.

I had major seperation anxiety when I was young and I have pretty bad anxiety occasionally and mild anxiety almost all of the time. There is such a thing as anxiety.

wow dumb docter!!
thats total bull crap. i have major axienty and dont agree with ANY of that. it never goes away. it can only be controled but never leaves!

some anxiety problems will never go away, but some can. definitely, you need a mix of medication (at first) and extensive extensive therapy. but it is completely possible to get rid of anxiety issues.

if it wasn't, people would never be able to over come fears/phobias. but they can, so yes, you can overcome anxiety.

you can even overcome anxiety without medication in some situations using methods like controlled breathing or self hypnosis.

what a jerk!!! there is such thing as anxiety and that doctor doesent know what hes talking about. you should ask your mom if you could switch doctors or something

thats why i have always hated doctors and physcichatrists seroiusly sry bout that

 ya that's a funny joke.
i don't really talk about it but i suffered with anxiety issues throughout most of my tween years, separation anxiety. and LOL if someone tries to tell me that 'there's no such thing'.

'no such thing' as a voice in your head telling you your mom is going to die if you go to school today... ya, funny Doc.

I was pretty pissed - I've been seeing this guy for years and he's never made a comment like that.

And not for nothing, but I do think I have legitimate reasons for having anxiety. I had to battle a disease and watch my body/mind/family/friends deteriorate. I had to watch a friend die from the same disease. Every day I wonder in fear if another ache and pain is a tumor. Every 4 months I fear that today is the day I relapse. It's scary, but then again I guess everyone who has anxiety thinks it's legitimate.

Shelby, he's a D.O. Would that make any difference as far as philosophy when it comes to an M.D.?

My doctor once made a comment like that after I kept coming back for like 2 months complaining of severe stomach pain.
She randomly was like, "But seriously, this needs to end." And went on to imply that I was making it up.
Until I went to a gastroentronologist who revealed that I had an intestinal blockage. Yeah, all in my head.

Once a doctor reveals that they don't trust the symptoms you're telling them, it's time to move on and find a new doctor.

not really, no. personal philosophy is just that, personal. i mean, your job can kinda reflect it, but not really. people will feel the way they want to feel about things. and because psychology is a "soft" science (as opposed to a hard science like chemistry or math where thing never change, psychology is plyable, and moldable and changes with society)

is it a possiblity that he didn't express himself very well? like maybe he was trying to say "there is no such thing as anxiety caused by....whatever" does that make sense? like he was trying to say something else, but he did express himself clearly? did you challenge his statement and ask him to explain himself? is this the man who writes you an rx for ativan or does your psychiatrist?

Anxiety is a real and true thing, but I feel that you can overcome alot of the issues that make the anxiety flare up.

The bottomline is you need to find out the root cause of it all. That is what your hoping right?

No, originally it was is partner. Its two men who work together in the practice seeing the same patients. (IE, when one can't get the patient the other will) They both prescribe the refills the other one gave if needed. He hasn't written an RX for Ativan specifically, (that was the other doctor, at the recommendation of that and a psychiatrist which I still see) but he's put me on Celexa and Zoloft before. That was waaaaaaaay back when I was still on treatment and having major issues with depression.

We know the "cause" of the anixety, but why it happens when it does is a mystery. Right now I think we're focused on treating it, because while it hasn't completely gone away, it does get better.

many times, anxiety is a triggered responce to something. if the trigger was discovered, and controlled, you wouldn't need medication. does that make sense? discovering what triggers anxiety attacks would be the main way to end them.

That's kinda what I was trying to say. We know why I have anxiety, but we don't know what triggers the attacks.

do you know what controlled breathing is?

Yep, that's actually something I just learned in therapy. My therapist before this new lady was actually kind of a looney tune and everything went in one ear and out the other no matter how hard I tried. My new lady is really good and she taught me the controlled breathing, and I'll admit it helps. It's just kinda hard to use when you're trapped in a 12inch wide tube. LOL
