Please dispel DVC rumor

A co-worker just returned from a family vacation is Alabama. On the return drive back to PA they stoped for the "free" tour of a Fairfield Timeshare.

The Fairfield sales person informed them - as part of the sales pitch - that DVC will be moving to the "traditional" time share format for all future DVC resorts. That is, members will be locked into a specific week each year unless they "trade" that week with other members! This was reported to be as a result of the great demand for DVC memberships/property.

Sounds rather far fetched to me especially as other timeshare organizations are moving to the DVC format - including Fairfield!

Has anyone heard of this plan?

I haven't heard this, and I checked on TUG for any such rumor. I'm guessing it's bogus.

I might just mention that about three years ago, before we became DVC members, that we went to a Fairfield sales pitch. It took the better part of an afternoon, and was thoroughly unpleasant. I know Fairfield is the biggest timeshare company, so they must be doing something right - but when the salesperson heard we were also considering DVC, he went ballistic. Could've been that he was having a bad day, but ... we collected our Universal passes and got the heck outta there.

I got told the same thing by Fairfield - came home and called member service - Fairfield wishes DVC would - they are losing business to DVC and this is their way of hiting back so far DVC has done nothing to stop it.

Actually, Fairfield is building a timeshare resort next to Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort as part of the Bonnet Creek project (not to be confused with Disney's Bonnet Creek golf course).

As already suggested, it's highly unlikely that a sales agent for another timeshare company would have any reliable information about future programs for DVC.

While the claim may seem to downplay DVC in the eyes of some, the concept runs contrary to any resonable understanding of the DVC program. At a time when most timeshares are moving towards a point-based system, it's pretty unbeleivable that DVC- a pioneer in that same system- would take action to return to a system totally opposite.

Many timeshare companies might wish that DVC would make such a move, but expecting the public to swallow the thought could well come back to haunt them in the future.

I'd reassure your co-worker that DVC is alive and well and not likely to make any such change...ever!

In addition to the above comments ... think of the cost involved to legally change DVC information in every state. Do you think members would pay for it ?

Actually, they have to file for each new DVC resort anyway, and nobody is suggesting they would convert remaining inventory at BCV to a traditional weekly timeshare format. So I don't think the issue is to "legally change DVC information in every state."

The issue is that Disney has a point-based system that's been successful -- and there's no reason to change it.

We own two time shares. One of them was not one of the smartest things we've done the other was one of the smartest things we've done. We own Fairfield and DVC. I'll let everyone figure out which one was smart and which one wasn't. But let's just apply some logic to the Fairfield sales person's statement.

Duh! If there's great demand it must be working, why would they change?

Even if this was true (and I don't believe it is), it would not effect current DVC members or resorts.

I could live with that, as I bought DVC based on the resorts that are in DVC now and not what "could be" later. In other words...I would not be effected.

Gotta love rumors...especially when they come from the competition!

I was wondering what the construction entrance was for next to Carribbean Beach. What is the Bonnett Creek Project? I've never heard anything about it. I thought that location is Disney property.

The 482-acre Bonnet Creek Resort is bordered on three sides by Walt Disney World, but it's not Disney property. Fairfield Resorts recently reached an agreement to purchase about 10% of the Bonnet Creek property for a 744-unit timeshare resort. The door is open to the possibility of a future expansion on another parcel with another 350 units.

from what I have heard it is more the other way! other timeshares are going to point systems instead of fixed weeks.
