I don't consider a hairdresser a tipped position. :)

The woman that does my hair is also the co-owner of the salon, so the only time I may tip her is at Christmas.

Tipping varies widely from place to place. It's only in the last three or four years that I've ever even considered tipping a hairdresser.

I know you want the thread closed, but there's no way I would tip 20% for getting my hair cut! :guilty:

Wella haircolor gel and Developer 20 (also Wella) and a $2.50 dispenser bottle = $10.50, from Sally Beauty, and I get way more compliments on my home color jobs than I've ever gotten for a salon color job.

I've also recently started trying stylists at cheapo places like Hair Cuttery or Great Clips, but only when they come recommended by ladies with good-looking hair styles who've used those stylists. I just bought a Great Clips haircut card which I preloaded with 10 haircuts, at $9.99/each. So, I went from paying about $150 every 4-6 weeks, on my hair, to $25 and I promise my hair looks every bit as good as it always did.

What if your hairdresser is also the owner of a large salon?

Why don't dental hygientists get tipped???

Great point. What about x ray techs, why dont they get a tip. Or cashiers at walmart, what about your childs parapro, the nurses at nursing homes, the person who slices your meat at the deli, the guys who changes your oil and does repairs on your car, the kid in at the drive through at mickey ds. What about the tellers at the banks. When does it all end.

OP, I'm also in Canada and tipping is not 20% here (the city and province where I live) for hairdressers. It's anywhere from 10-15%; same as restaurant tips. There is no two-tier wage here; tips or no tips everyone gets at least the $10.50/hr. minimum wage and most salons offer a blend of min. wage and commission. Some salons offer straight commission, which is usually 40-50% of all services. HTH!

:thumbsup2 my sentiments exactly, I am happy to see there are some who have the same concerns as myself, I don't feel so alone!

:goodvibes in my province too, this is how it works....which helps a lot! Now I know I wasn't being cheap when I tipped the customary 10% for a 20 minute cut.....thanks for posting :goodvibes

Do people tip when they pick up pizza rather than having it delivered?
