nevermind, this is not what I intended with my post....I should have known better, sorry.....mods, please close

Wow, you're only tipping $5 for a $60 haircut and only want to tip $20 for a $175 service? Sorry, but that IS cheap so you're gonna look cheap.

Oh as for thoughts? If you can't afford a $60 haircut and the appropriate tip then you need to find a place that fits your budget with a fair amount for a tip included.

I got my hair done last week. It was $150. I tipped her $30. I like her and she does a good job with my hair so the $30 was deserved.

Do you have a job that relies heavily on tips? If not then the comparison on not getting tips is not a fair one.

....
My hair appointments are beginning to make me think about how much this is all costing!! If I stop tipping will I be a cheapstake??? .....

Are tips something that Definitely need to be given to a hairdresser???

Thoughts??

Yes, if you stop tipping you will be a cheapskate. If you can't afford to tip your hairdresser then you can't afford the services.

I believe that hairdressers should be tipped. It is a part of the total cost of the service. If your normal trim/cut is $60 I think your normal tip of $5 is too small. I REALLY think a $5 tip on a $175 service would be an insult. If you are having trouble coming up with the $$ for your hair services, then I will suggest you go elsewhere, someplace that charges less. Or not go as frequently.

Sorry, this is already being taken out of context of what I was asking.....nevermind....I should have remembered that tipping is a very personal decision and varies greatly region to region....
Thanks :goodvibes

you could go to a college and have the students do your hair. not sure if you tip there or not but it would give them the experiance they need and you will look great. my friend goes all the time. i would go but its over an hours drive for me. I go to supercuts. I found a lady there who takes her times loves chatting she cracks me up and it costs me about $20. just my thoughts. think of how much you could save for other things that your family would enjoy. $150 for a color ekks I do mine myself going to Sallys beauty to get the color. they are very helpful. my hair is dark brown so easy. Maybe i am just too frugal :confused3

oh, no! just to clarify....I wasn't thinking of leaving only $5 for a $175 service! I was just trying to see if others think hairdressers are on the mandatory tip list.....but this thread will blow up in my face, so I've asked for it to be closed....I will make my own decisions regarding my tip, and really should have remembered how quickly these things can go dooowwnnhilll!
Thanks for your suggestions, I do tend to go not as often, and I think this is the best strategy :)
Thanks again!

I tend to agree!! thanks for the suggestion! My haircuts started off at $50.00 and in the last yr. they've raised to $60!!! just crazy cost for 20 minutes in a chair, I think!
Thanks for your ideas :goodvibes

In Canada, they don't rely heavily on tips, they get paid very well, tips are a thank you for a job well done....I do tip as well, and asked at the counter what was appropriate and was told the $5.00, so I don't feel bad about that .... However, the cost of the cut has skyrocketed and only takes 20 minutes in the chair ....$60.00 later....I'd like to make that kind of cash every 20 minutes!....
thanks

Thanks for the replies, I can see that this is a hot topic, so I won't be posting anymore in the thread....I have asked for it to be closed, I appreciate the suggestions and, I will continue to tip my hairdresser in case anyone is wondering.....I've gleened that it is important!
:goodvibes Merry Christmas y'all :goodvibes

My sister is a hairdresser, but I have no clue what the normal/average tip is. She doesn't live that close to me and she does bang trims whenever we get together. Once a year, maybe twice I will go to the hair salon where she works and get my hair colored and cut. She only charges me for the product and I don't tip her.

She does get an hourly wage but it is very low-I believe under the minimum plus tips.

I would base the tip on the amount of time you are there. If it's just a cut and you are there for 20 min or less then I would think $5 or so would be good. If you are there for 2 hrs getting something done then you should realize that $5 is not enough as she/he could make a lot more $ doing haircuts only.

Nothing screams
"OPEN ME AND READ!!!!!"
like a thread title that says "Please close thread." ;)

I know and I am soooo sorry for starting it **BIG BLUSH** I should have stopped before I started, didn't think well on that one!!! :headache:

Someone forgot the rule and thought a box of popcorn was appropriate? I think not.

I asked the last hairdresser what was the 'expected' tip. I was told 20%.

So I tipped 20% for a few months.

Then I found another salon where the prices were lower.

I'm still tipping 20%.

I still look the same.

I think.

Hair is expensive stuff and mine grows too fast!

My sister is a hair stylist as well and even though she cuts my hair for free I still tip her 20% of what she would normally charge. I think tipping is part of what we should include for certain services and this is one of them. Now, if (like at a restaurant) I wasn't happy with the service I received, I would tip less than 20%, but yes, I do feel that tipping a hair stylist is necessary.

Standrd is 20% of the cost of the service. So for a $175 service, standard tip would be $35.

What if your hairdresser is also the owner of a large salon?

Why don't dental hygientists get tipped???
