I have a Pak n Play for our grandson who I keep while parents work. It has a separate pad which seems hard and lumpy to me and I have sheets.
He does not seem to sleep well in there. Is there a better pad I can buy somewhere to make it more cozy? I have browsed online and looked in every store, but no luck. Since our youngest is 19, I am probably not up on the best sites.
What suggestions are there? I need to find something for insomniac baby!

Could you fold an old comforter and use it as a mattress?

You can buy foam at a fabric store like Joanne's that, with a pad and sheet, will make the pack 'n play much more comfortable. Don't get it too thick since that isn't safe for a baby sleeping. Most fabric stores will cut the foam to size for you and it's pretty reasonably priced. You are a nice grandma to be concerned for the baby's comfort!

I cut a memory foam mattress pad to size for my dogs crates and used a zippered pillow case (which had a cheaper pad in it) and it works great. Soft but not too soft.

I agree w/ the memory foam insert suggestion.. whatever you do be careful to make sure it fits in the pack -n- play very snugly - any gaps between the edge of the foam insert and the sides of the pack-n-play is somewhere the baby could slip/get stuck. I would not fold a blanket or anything for this reason

How old/heavy is the baby? Some babies just never sleep well in a PnP.

Remember if he is an infant, it is very important to have a firm mattress that fits perfectly into the bed to reduce the risk of sids and suffocation. If he is indeed an infant, and you keep and will continue to keep him full time, I would invest in a regular crib with a new mattress. Well worth the money to be safe.

I bought a pack and play mattress for my daughter for when we travel. I got it from Amazon. It was worth it for us. She wouldn't really sleep in the pack and play otherwise, and I don't blame her. It's not very comfortable normally. Definitely purchase a mattress that was made for a pack and play. It needs to fit correctly and be firm so that it is a safe place for baby to sleep!

Thank you all for the suggestions. The pad on Amazon looks perfect--I don't know why I didn't think to look there; I got the 26 dvd Baby Einstein set there last week:).
He is 6 months and weighs 17 lbs.
We bought a Pak n Play instead of a crib so that we can move it around--he has the guest room on the main floor but it he sleeps over we move it upstairs to our room.

With him only being 6 months old, I would just stick with the pad that's included with the pack & play for safety reasons. If it won't work for him, invest in a crib with a firm mattress. It's not safe to use homemade mattresses (foam, blankets, etc) because he can easily get trapped and/or suffocate. I'm not sure if the mattress someone linked on Amazon can be used with an infant or not (maybe you should email Graco and ask).

We found a very similar pack and play mattress at Babies r Us. I think it was around $30. The pack and play sheet for it perfectly.

Vote for the dream on me mattress from amazon. We had our daughter on just the pad for the first few weeks until we noticed she slept a lot better on our bed. It fits very well in our play yard (lion king one from babies r us), I was concerned that the sizing might be off from the graco ones but it fits perfectly. She still prefers our bed but is much more comfortable now. We have the foam one.

It's ok to do the memory foam insert as long as it's layered between the original pad and the sheet.

So it should go original pad, foam insert then P+P sheet pulled snugly over top.
