I am trying to figure this seeing as I have never been to Vegas.
So each casino has some sort of a counter or something that you go to and sign up..then they give you a card? Am I correct that you then scan or swipe this card when you go to play???

I know some properties are owned by the same company..so you only need one card for each group of casino's? Just wondering how many cards I will end up with

Yep, it's called a players card.

You simply go to the player's card desk and show photo ID; and they enter the information into their system; and give you the cards. Show it when you buy chips at a table game; and put it in a machine when you play slot machines or video poker. Some properties event let you accumulate points when you shop in their stores or spend money in their restaurants; just ask when you sign up.

Usually you can set up one account, and you each get a card; and the points you each earn accumulate together on the account.

Comps and free stuff is issued depending on how much $$ you can prove you gambled. Sometimes a property will have 3x points on holidays; and you can accumulate more points depending on how & when you gamble.

The bigger casino companies have player's cards that you can accumulate points and use at all their properties - MGM Mirage has 9 strip properties; Harrahs has 7 properties; Boyd Gaming has The Orleans + other off strip properties; and Station Casinos has several properties but none on the strip.

Harrahs has such a well organized system that you can earn points at their properties all over the country and use them in Las Vegas.

Most players points will wipe out within 6 months if the card is not used, fyi. MGM, Harrah's and Stations are this way, not sure about Boyd, Wynn or Palms. I would only get the card at the places you intend to play at. The reason is because oftentimes they will give you free sign up bonuses and once you get the card you can't get the bonuses again. So get it where you intend to play so you can save the bonuses for your next trip if you don't play there. Use the card for all your play and at the end of your trip don't be afraid to ask a slot host if you qualify for any comps. A lot of people charge their meals/shows to their rooms so if they have enough play at the end it's comped. We usually just ask when we want the comp or we get free RFB up front, so no discrepencies at the end. In Vegas, if you don't ask, you will not receive. OTOH, be prepared to be laughed at if you don't play enough. But so what -- if you don't ask, you are the only one who loses.
You also use the card when you play table games. You give the card to the dealer or tell them that you want to be rated. On the strip, they don't usually rate you unless you are playng $25 a hand, unless it's really slow. Downtown, you can get rated at $5 a hand depending on where you play.
