Can I take play doh on the flight?
DD loves the stuff and it keeps her quiet for hours, I was wondering if they allowed that kind of stuff?

yes you can!:goodvibes I thought about this one carefully, could it be construed as a liquid in any way, and took the chance, and i had no problems at all. US security opened it up on the way back to check but they seemed happy enough too:thumbsup2 It really is a lifesaver,

Interesting to know :teeth:

I would have thought it would bear a remarkable similarity to plastic explosive, although having never actually seen any plastic explosive in real life I can't say for certain.

You hit the nail on the head - exactly what I was wondering! But as you - not having seen any plastic explosive I don't know! :rotfl: Although I think plasterscene may be more like it than Doh. :confused3

i would look for this to change. just recently in the states there have been several screened bags turn up with ordinary items packed in such a way as to resemble explosive devices. Such as modeling clay and or sticks of butter (:lmao: I kid you not) with cell phone chargers. Once examined more closely with manual inspection they were harmless items. However, speculation by homeland security was that this could potentially be dry run practice looking for weak spots in screening. I should think play doh would get a nice close look if they are stepping up the level of awareness. What a crazy time we live in:confused3

play doh seems like an awful thing to bring on an airplane in terms of the other people on board....that stuff gets ground into carpets, upholstery, etc..

Your question did make me and my son smile yesterday at the thought. We again thought of explosives and thought it wasn't a good thing to try and take on board. Personally I wouldn't but I was surprised to learn someone else has and it was okay.

I agree with Beth here that it isn't a good thing to take on board for messing up seats, carpets, etc though.

The first time I took the kids to Orlando they were only 5 and 7. It was their first flight and I desperately didn't want them to be bored. They both had haversacks filled to the brim of all manner of things and were quite heavy. So much so if they had fell over backwards they would have been like beetles on their backs trying to get up again.:) As it turned out they hardly used anything, just mags and puzzles books. I dread to think what the weight must have been, wouldn't be allowed now.

However, looking at your daughter's age and if play doh keeps her amused go for it. It is hard to find things at that age that will keep her occupied though again with heightened security I would have thought it wouldn't be allowed. One of those books where they have lots of pictures in a picture might entertain her trying to find things you want her to look for. Similar to Where's Wally but a younger version. I think you are very brave taking those age groups on a plane. I am racking my brains trying to think of anything else that may keep her amused but it is surprisingly hard.

What about fuzzy felt? Do they still make that? What things are you taking to keep her occupied already?

what an amusing description!!!

yes, when my kids were little we had lots with us, toys, puzzles, coloring books/crayons, cards, and lots and lots and lots of snacks (cheerios/pretzls/etc)......

and in the end it always turned out they found something on the plane to keep them busy for at least part of the time they weren't sleeping....

when my son was 2 he kept the little hot towel they hand out and used it to clean everything in sight - the window, chair backs, tables...he would have cleaned the whole plane had they let him...

Hi again Gem!! :) - I'm glad you asked that question as I was wondering the same thing!! - PLease let me know what you decide and how you get on with the trip - I look forward to your report!:thumbsup2

Thanks for the suggestions, I understand that some people may let their children squash play doh it to everything at hand and make a complete mess with it however we have never had this problem with Shelby as she knows that she must keep it on the tray table and if it goes anywhere else then she doesn't have it. So I don't really have any issue with mess making.

I think the puzzle books sound good, she would probably scribble in those quite well, she has a thing about reading too so I think she will benefit from some books etc.

I am planning on wrapping everything up on the plane while she is asleep and then she will have lots of little presents to open which may help to occupy her too.

I am not too worried about Harley as he is so laid back that I am expecting him to sleep a lot of the time we are an board.

I love the image of the little one cleaning away! Can he come to my house? :laundy: :laundy:

it was terribly adorable....however, those cleaning tendencies never seemed to reveal themselves at home...
but he's a 'bit' older now and in the air force - i daresay, he probably is a bit neater there than at home....
