Platepass "warning" on Dollar Rental

Does anyone know how many tolls are from the mco airport to the wdw resort areas & how much each of them cost??

$8.99 each day is highway robbery. I rented a car in Dallas last month from National. The George Bush Turnpike does not have cash tolls. The options are either get a transponder or the State takes a picture of your plate and bills you (higher toll amounts). National doesn't offer a transponder, so you let them take a picture of the plate. I was billed $3.95 per day used (not every day rented) plus the tolls. I used it to and from the airport to Richardson. It was $5.59 tolls plus $3.95 convenience fee each way. So $9.54 total each way. I was there for 12 days for work, a each day rented charge would have added up. The only downside was it takes 4 to 6 weeks to bill from National, which meant I had to send in a separate expense account.

I'm a little confused. What would be our best choice for two upcoming trips (Total 20 days over 6 months) with a rental car? Do you go to a nearby pharmacy or grocery store or buy something online? Thanks. We've been hit paying 2 tolls to rental car companies and they are expensive.

As people are saying, there was still cash lanes, I bring a roll of quarters with me and have never had a problem. Maybe someday if they go cashless I will need to try something else, but for now the roll of quarters is the cheapest and easiest. It also doesn't hurt to ask for a receipt if the booth is manned, so you have proof you paid in cash, but as I said, its never been an issue for me, just make sure the light has turned green when you go through.

For the basic Orlando area, I just pay the tolls. Get some ones, get a roll of quarters, and we're good to go.

We might try to drive to the coasts a bit since we will have an extended stay and thought having a pass might be easier than worrying about it. I'm curious if it would be better to just purchase a temporary sunpass and how you go about it. Looks as if it costs either 4.99 or 19.99...not sure how much of a time frame that covers.

As far as I know, it is ONLY the Miami area, on the turnpike (which can be avoided), where you *have to have* the sunpass. Anywhere else you can still pay the tolls in cash.

But I don't consider paying tolls not-easy, and I don't feel it's something to worry about. I have my ones, I have my quarters, the only thought is "how much for this toll?" and that's it. :)

Is there a way to pre-purchase a transponder if I live out of state? If so, how long would it take for delivery?

After all these years, I'd be happy to cough up a little cash for the convenience. Why didn't I think about this years ago?

You can order the transponder or sticker from the sunpass website (http://www.sunpass.com/). If you are going to use it for a rental car, you can just use your car information and change it to the rental car information when you pick up the rental.

As a PP noted, there is one road in the Tampa area that is cashless. It's the Selmon Expwy, SR-618.

Good grief. LOL. If it's near the Tampa airport that is wher we were fined. Just our luck.

Thanks for this - first time there, I had only found the retail locations where one could buy in person. Now I find the page for ordering.

You are welcome. If you order online, be sure to check your account. I have ordered a sticker twice. Both times, there were charges on the account while it was on the delivery truck on its way to me. If you see the charges, just call them and they will remove the charges.

We rented from Dollar last January. Same warning on their site then. All of the tolls we passed through to Disney, and from there to Port Canaveral were ones we could pay with coins. Going again this coming January--just bringing our roll of quarters.
