I am renting a car through Thrifty and they have a section about a plate pass for roads that you can't pay cash for tolls. This pass is $8.99 a day extra. Do I really need this or can I still pay cash? Gosh these rentals are already so high and extra $8.99 is over the edge.

You don't really need that "feature". The two main tolls between the airport and WDW both have cash lanes and give change.

I dont know where you got your quote for thrifty but I joind southwest rapid rewards which is free and thru that site I booked an intermediate car also using a AAA code and I got the car for 2 weeks for $302.90 including everything. I did not get the pass though.

Yes that is a complete rip off. I just bought a Sunpass for $4.99. Gives you a discount on tolls and you get to bypass all of the toll booths. I would rather not sit in a line of cars where people are fumbling around looking for change.

FWIW the only time I've had to wait behind someone is when the person was something of a jerk anyway; cut me off on purpose as I followed the signs to slow down as I approached the booths, then had some sort of issue with payment. (and it was then my fault for staying in that lane, as there were choices...but I figured since he was in such a hurry he surely would have his money ready too, LOL)

One time and we've had multiple trips since 2010, a few involving us going back and forth to the airport more than once, etc etc.

OP, if you're going to Miami while on your trip, there won't be cash lanes there. I just read about ONE intra-city toll road in Tampa that doesn't have a cash lane. But any "normal" driving between MCO and WDW/Universal, and even out to Port Canaveral, will have cash lanes.
