We had a DLP - it was a lemon and lasted less than a year. We replaced it with an LCD which has been great for us. We want to purchase a 2nd large screen TV for our gameroom and are looking at a Panasonic Plasma (1080p, 600hz). My dad said that he remembered long ago being told lifespan for plasma was only 5-7 years and they went out. I never heard that and we can't find anything online to support it :confused3

Does anyone know anything about life span on plasmas? Is there a glaring reason why not to purchase a plasma over a LCD? We can get more "bang for our buck" by purchasing a plasma over a LCD.

Thanks for any thoughts :goodvibes

I think that was only a problem with Plasma TV's first came out...AFAIK they have a much longer life-span now.

Plasma tvs are rated by hours, not years. If you have your tv on 15 hours a day it will not last as long as it would if you watch 3-4 hours a day. Do a search for how many hours a plasma tv should last and you'll see a huge number. There are reasons to choose one format over the other, but lifespan isn't a factor.

Where's Bicker when we need him?:)

I'm in the market for an HD TV and recently read a comparison guide on Best Buy's website. It talks about the differences between plasma, LCD and LED LCD televisions. I would encourage you to look it up and read it as it will help you decide which type to choose. Good luck! (FWIW, I'm still undecided about what to buy.)

Plasma TV's are made differently know...they are no different than LCD's and have a much better picture. However they do use more electricity and put out more heat. We have a 58" and it warms up our Den nicely in the winter:lmao:

We have LCD's in the rest of the house. But e love our plaasma and will continure ot go that route for our big screen in the future.

Our plasma doesn't heat up our family room. But our plasma is 42" and the size of our family room, at 24'x24', may be larger than your den so I don't know if those differences really make a difference.

Wait a minute....okay, I just walked over to the TV and really did not notice any heat at all coming from it. I mean the screen is warm, but not really giving off any heat. Don't think I'd want to try to use it as a heat source in the winter time.

When we were shopping for a large screen TV (3 years ago I think it's been), we compared the picture quality of the plasma with the LCD. At that time, stuff with a lot of motion (like NASCAR races, and my DH is a big time fan) you could see "drag" on the LCD screen. So that was the main reason we chose plasma. Plus got a great "end of year" close out deal at Target!! :)

I believe that the best picture quality and lowest power consumption is now found with LED screens. They don't, as yet, make huge ones, just as they couldn't at first with LCD but the techology is moving quickly.

Thanks, all, for your opinions! We did like the LED but they are much pricier and not many in the large sizes. So, we ended up with a 58 inch plasma that is energy star, so hopefully it won't be as much of an energy sucker as some of the others. It's going in a large room and used for lots of football games so I think plasma will be the better option in the long run.

It'll be in on Tuesday!
