Planning for Quarantine

Hey everyone, I have a logistical question.... This is not about whether or not we should continue planning our Christmas trip, but what exactly does happen if one of us tests positive before our return to Canada? I worry about a positive test given the numbers and the fact that my children are too young to be vaccinated. Of course we will get the Manulife Covid insurance to cover these sorts of things.

So we do our 72 hour prior to departure test and one of us is positive....now what? Im assuming that hubby would leave with the healthy child and let me quarantine with the positive one. But where would we stay? Do hotels have to take you? Are there special quarantine hotels? What about meals and such if you can't go out? Are there services that will deliver what is needed for quarantine? So many logistical questions. If anyone has any input that would be fantastic.

This information has been extremely hard to come by. Even web searches reveal nothing -- I sort of expected that there would be a few articles about this at this point in the pandemic, but I cannot find anything. Your thoughts about what to do are pretty much mine as well. Should that happen, Disney concierges may be able to offer some direction.

Manulife insurance will not cover your costs for hotel, food and airfare, so you need to be prepared to absorb those costs. Manulife and all other insurance companies will only give coverage for medical expenses related to Covid as long as the Cdn government has a travel advisory issued for the US.

I think you just need to make arrangements for hotel and then stay there and do what you have to do to get food and wait it out/get tested. I don't know if I would offer up the info on my positive test to Disney because then you are giving them a reason to refuse you lodging. I would be interested to know what their policy is on that if a guest needs to stay there because they are positive. If anyone knows, please share.

Yes, I see that Manulife is being sneaky; promising to pay for quarantine and yet in the fine print, this only applies for trips longer than a month.

Ah well, guess I'd just have to take the car rental and drive it back to Canada. Wow that sounds like great fun :(

Yep
It is super important to read all Insurance policies well.
Taking a rental car from Orlando back to Canada might present some logistical/medical issues you might want to think about.
1. Driving alone with a child that is sick
2. How to safely access food ,gas and washroom breaks without passing Covid to others.
3. Medical access on the way home if needed.
4. Safe hotel/motel for a break along the way, again without passing Covid to others.
Yes, the driving distance between Florida to Canada is 1829 km. It takes approximately 19h 21m to drive from Florida to Canada.

For me I would
1. make sure my current insurance policy covers myself & family for medical care while in Orlando,
ask at Concierge where to access medical care and testing.

2. Upon someone testing positive I would have to know that I have the time & funds to self isolate in a
hotel/motel for the full quarantine period. With my diet I would need to order in groceries and be able to cook.
10 days of Fast food wouldn't work for me.

3. Know I have enough resources to entertain my child for the full quarantine which is something that I know would be a struggle for me.

4. Have a basic back-up medicine kit/ thermometer, tylenol/ advil cold meds etc.

5. Now here comes my back up......... back up plan,,, what happens if I come down with Covid 19 while caring for my child alone,,,?????
this one I have to think on. (Maybe the family separating is not a good idea.)

So much to think about ,,,it makes my head spin.

Best wishes to you

Hugs
Mel

An just the possibility of any part of all that is why I'm not going anywhere until we know more about how these issues will play out. Dealing with DH (with a 24 hour bug) one year was more than enough illness on a holiday for me.

As someone else said on another thread. Holidays are supposed to be fun. Not a new source of anxiety.

Agreed. Even though we're vaccinated, the risk of a positive test coming up and being forced to quarantine for two weeks in a foreign country at our own expense, is enough of a reason for us to WAIT.
