In late July, we're looking at staying 2 nights at either the Grand Californian, or Disneyland Hotel and then 3 nights in San Diego. We're planning to (may be) do Disneyland the first day there, California Adventure the next and then head down to San Diego. We've come up with Sea World and the Zoo, but are limited on other activities and places to eat throughout the trip. Would love any suggestions anyone may have.

I recommend visiting the Hotel del Coronado. You can walk the grounds and have lunch or drinks there and it's just heavenly. I grew up in SD and loved hanging out there. (Still do.) Anyone can swim at the beach adjacent to the hotel, and it's a nice beach. For a grittier scene, visit Ocean Beach.

If you like Mexican food, make sure you stop at any local taco shop. They're not fancy, but, man, the food's delicious. If you'd rather go somewhere a little user friendly to a non-local, try Rubio's, especially if you like fish tacos.

Where are you staying?

I'm doing the same trip with my family July 11-19. I would appreciate similar suggestions, but had another question.

Some time ago a caller, I think, contacted the podcast about this very trip and he took the trip down to San Diego. I'm planning on doing the same (inspired by the caller) but was hoping to listen to his segment again. Does anyone on this wonderful board remember which podcast that was?

Thanks Much
Dan

I agree with seeing the Hotel Del Coronado. There's also a nice sit-down Mexican restauant about a block up on the other side of the street called Miguel's Cocina. It's set back in the courtyard of the El Cordova hotel and has a very nice, relaxing patio seating area and great food.

You may also want to check out Old Town for a more historical slant on San Diego. Also, instead of the zoo, look into visiting the Wild Animal Park about thirty miles north near Escondido. More of a natural habitat park than a zoo.

We absolutely love Mexican food. Especially Sinoran sp (Arizona/New Mexico). We also love Seafood. WDW lacks tremendously in the Mexican food department. Any ideas would be appreciated.

My husband and I go to San Diego a lot, it's so much fun. There is so much to do.

Balboa Park is so beautiful to walk around (it is where the zoo is). They also have lots of really fantastic museums and of course the zoo is fantastic. I love the botanical gardens there (small, but really pretty and FREE). You can look into a blaboa park combo pass thing on their website if you are interested in all their museums.

We LOVE Old Town. So much really good food and fun to walk around lots of neat shops and they often have various markets/ arts and craft fairs going on.

Coronado is really pretty, it is fun to walk around the hotel and the little shops down the street. Moo Time creamery is wonderful- their pomegranate chocolate chip ice cream is to die for. Bring a picnic and have lunch on the beach outside the Hotel Del, and then stroll over for ice cream down the street at Moo Time Creamery after.

We love staying over near Mission Beach. We are obsessed with The Mission (the very best breakfast/lunch you will EVER have- the blackberry banana pancakes are like heaven and the mexican hot chocolate is yummo). If you have kids, they have a fun beach there, you can rent bikes, and over by the pier/carnival type area they have one of those wave machines where people can learn to surf in a controlled environment (pay by the hour- it's fun to watch too).

The Wild Animal Park is really great too, but it is a ways out of town (you will drive on a funny road past a ton of Ostrich farms). We had a great time there and ate at Studio Diner on the way back to downtown San Diego. Be aware that because it is more inland it gets a lot hotter there, so go early and be prepared for heat.

The USS Midway is also a fun visit especially if you have kids that are really into ships and airplanes. It is also a pretty area to walk around (FYI you can park at the parking garage at the nearby mall for free).

Have a great time!!

For seafood, try Tom Ham's Lighthouse on Harbor Island (by the airport). I don't eat seafood, but the rest of my family loves it. The atmosphere is great too. If you go to Old Town, you'll find Mexican restaurants there. Many locals like Old Town Mexican Cafe, but I haven't been there in a while. I'd say try any Alberto's, Roberto's, Rigobert's, etc., taco shop and you'll get a good meal. Or ask any nearby local and they'll bend your ear about their favorite Mexican place. Mine is El Compadre in El Cajon, but I doubt you'd find yourself out there.:)

Are you staying near the beach, Mission Valley or somewhere else?

Oh I wanted to add, I think it was OC Tony that did that segment on SD for the podcast a long time ago.

Yep - it was my DL correspondent-in-crime, OC_Tony. I'm sure he or his wife will see this thread and chime in with more advice. I don't know much at all about San Diego, unfortunately!

The zoo in San Diego is a definite must do. We found Sea World to be fun, but just okay. I wouldn't hurry to go back. I've visited the one in Orlando several times and I like it much better.

How are you getting down to San Diego? We took the train (as was recommended by Tony in one of the podcasts) and it's a beautiful 2-hour ride right by the ocean. DH and I still talk about it! It's not too expensive and it's a great way to travel.

Seaport village is a fun place to do some shopping. Torrey Pines is the best quiet beach. Take a boat ride out to Pt. Loma. We love the spaghetti factory for a quick meal, in the gas light district. I love SD wish we still lived there.

If you have time, rent some bikes on Coronado and spend the day exploring the island. The Hotel del Coronado is beautiful and a must visit. If you're driving down from Orange County, consider Legoland. It's a really fun day, especially if you have kids.

If you like chocolate, try to get to a Chuao Chocolate Cafe.

There's also the Delmar Fairgrounds, but I'm not sure what's on when you'll be there.

Balboa Park is lovely and there are some great museums (not to mention one of the best zoos in the world) there.

Have a great time! SoCal is lovely!!
