My mom is planning a last-minute trip to Florida. They are flying down tomorrow, picking up a new car and driving down to the keys for a couple of days (they have those rooms reserved). Then they are returning to the Orlando area. They might decide to spend a day at the Kennedy Space Center. How long does it really take to see it, as we've never toured?

Then they wanted to spend a couple of days at WDW, so they'll need a room in Orlando. I have not pinned her down as to which nights, but I'm thinking we'll try to make reservations tonight after I share my ideas with her and can get a decision out of her.

She's looking for a basic room that's clean, isn't musty or smokey and is safe. Free breakfast would be a plus. She doesn't care about the pool, etc. This is a budget trip, so no resort ideas needed. They just want a very basic place to sleep. Oh and they will be spending all their time at the WDW parks, so something close to the parks would be nice. (Especially since they don't know their way around down there).

I've read some threads on best/worst so I have some idea of good vs. bad, but we usually stay on property so I'm a little at a loss. We stayed one night at Amerisuites Universal this month after our cruise. It was fine. Something similar was what I had in mind, but is there something closer that would compare for a good price?

Any suggestions for me to share?

yes there is a Amerisuites fairly close to WDW - Calypos Cay - is the area.

It is closer to EPcot than the mk or studios or ak....

however if safety is the main consider - stay on property - very few hotels (not resort or timeshare) have security guards - so if they want safety - stay on site.

you can get the Pop Century for $74 until july with the codes - go look on
www.mousesavers.com
for the codes.

there is a LaQuinta in the area too - if she belongs to AAA there is $50 rate per night in the AAA Florida book.

I don't think they need security guards per se. She just doesn't want a cheap hotel so much that she'd want to stay in a dive.

I personally agree. I'd prefer to stay on for many reasons. She just doesn't get it. ;)

Anyone else with any suggestions? We need to make some decisions tonight.

Yes, I would stay in the one of downtown disney hotels.

For instance, the Doubletree and Hotel Royal Plaza both have special rates listed on mousesavers.com There is a Holiday Inn now in dt disney also.

Near downtown disney is the Hawthhorn Suites, a Residence Inn by Marriott (personal fav) which both have free breakfasts and nice family type chains.

herc.
