Planes?

We just saw Planes with our son, we all really enjoyed it. I don't get what all the complaints about this movie are, it's certainly not the best Disney movie I have ever seen but neither is it the worst. I thought it was really good and my son (5) loved it. I thought it was far better then Cars 2 and even Brave for that matter.

I really think people need to give this movie a chance. I'm not sure what some of these critics were looking for, if you go in there expecting Casablanca you are going to be disappointed but its a quality family movie that I can see us watching again and again.

I agree! To be honest, I don't expect it to be my new favourite movie, but I'm going to watch it with an open mind and not judge a movie by it's poster/trailer. I didn't expect to love Tangled, but it really blew me away! :goodvibes

My family loved it and we thought the message was great, we even thought it was better than Cars 2

DH and I saw it Saturday evening in an almost empty theater. I really liked it!! It was cute and upbeat and good story line. A little like cars, but who cares. It was just good fun. I would recommend it, for whatever that's worth!!!:)

We saw it yesterday, and my daughter & I both really enjoyed it. I like CARS, I did NOT like Cars2 at all. I originally wasn't interested in seeing Planes b/c I thought it was a plane version of Cars but it's not... Cars was not an underdog story... Lightning wasn't an underdog... the lessons he learned were about slowing down, and that success in the world's eyes isn't necessarily success.

The main character in Planes learns different life lessons... he learns about never giving up, and chasing your dream. Was it predictable?(yes... it's a kids movie... what kids movie isn't?) We saw 'Turbo' a few weeks ago, and it was terrible... we didn't even stay for the whole thing.

You said it all better then I could!:thumbsup2

This little movie is getting more and more + reviews and was still in 5th place after 3 weeks.

It just shows you cannot judge a movie from critics or trailers. To be honest you have to see the thing!

We saw Planes at the Drive In along with Grown Ups 2. I was just going to see Planes because it was with the other movie. But I found myself cheering for the silly plane and I really enjoyed the movie. Now Gown Ups 2 was nother story. That was simply awful. :happytv:

"Planes" is not from Pixar. It's not even from the feature film division of Walt Disney Animation Studios.

"Planes" is from DisneyToon Studios, the division that primarily makes direct-to-video products.

Fast Company had an interesting piece about how "Planes" was originally going to be direct-to-video. See HOW DISNEY MADE "PLANES" FLY at http://www.fastcompany.com/3015124/how-disney-made-planes-fly

Here's how the article begins:

On August 9th, the Walt Disney Co. is releasing its next animated feature: Planes. Originally envisioned as a direct-to-DVD spin-off of Cars, the wildly successful Pixar franchise, Planes was never meant to be as a big summer movie.

But during production, a funny thing happened. Test audiences not only liked it, they really, really liked it.

Thanks for that background- I was wondering why there would be 2 Pixar movies in one summer, and why Planes was being released so late in the summer. Having seen Planes, I was pleasantly entertained, even though it seemed like a mix of Cars, Cars 2, and other films (Top Gun perhaps?). Planes isn't a timeless classic, but it was very well made (good jokes, dialogue, endearing protagonist, excellent animation) and most importantly, my kids loved it! Definitely appropriate that this was shown in the theater.

This little movie is slowly becoming a great one. I agree, not a Disney classic but a well done fun little movie!

Considering a few folks were saying it was a flop based on a trailer, after over a month in theaters, it's still in 5th place last weekend and up to $78,000,000 in box office!
