Planes?

You know, Planes isn't looking as awful as I thought it would. Well, not tye first trailer with that actually pretty beautiful music anyway.

I though Cars 2 would be great and Planes crap, and although the storyline of Planes looks like ANOTHER Cars 2, but with planes... I think they'll struggle to make it as bad as Cars 2. Wow that was bad.

People keep saying Cars 2 was bad, terrible, crap, whatver... but they never say what was bad about the movie. I didn't think it was bad at all, it was an enjoyable follow-up to a good movie, didn't think it lagged at all in the 1-1/2 hours or so.

To you, and anyone else that feels like chiming in... what was it about Cars 2 that you did not like, or that made it bad/terrible/crap?

I just wrote a loooong reply and then the browser closed down.... But the essence is that it lacked heart, soul, beauty and a strong storyline. I was at Pixar Talks where I heard 3 of the people who helped making Cars 2 talk about it and a lot of the focus was on the technical, how cool the cars were, how they were designed etc. Lasseter's focus is normally story story story, but Cars 2 was rushed and Lasseter spread too thin it seems. Pixar's strength is normally an amazing storyline and the ability to make the audience really care about the characters, whether it's a robot or a doll being thrown out by it's owner. Cars 2 was lacking both of those, and no amount of cool car brands or designs could make up for that.

The first trailer I remember featured More Human than Human by White Zombie. I've never heard their most ardent fan describe that as "beautiful music" so we must have seen a different one! :)

With all the different directions they could have gone with the story line, and they chose a storyline in which Mater becomes a spy? Odd.

I just don't understand why they went in the direction they did. I didn't like it at all, but because it has mater and lighting in it, my son loves it.

I wanted more Radiator Springs and more from the original group of cars then a World Grand Prix.

More Radiator Springs and the original group would've felt stale I think. I'm guessing the guys at Pixar wanted to do a James Bond-type spy movie with some humor. I think they accomplished it, and I think it the storyline of Lightning being frustrated with Mater then realizing he's a true friend was pretty good.

I almost thought Mater was too over the top & obnoxious. I liked him in Cars but really didn't care for him in Cars 2. Honestly Michael Kane was the only reason I saw it - I LOVE him. Some parts were funny, but I really wasn't impressed. Saw it once, never bought it. I haven't decided yet if I will see Planes. We probably will end up going to see it, but I can't say I'm as excited to see this as I would be Little Mermaid in 3D (not that I'm bitter about that one getting canceled ;))

I may be pressing for Planes this weekend so I can avoid The Smurfs 2. :scared1:

Little mermaid 3D was canceled???!!!!?? Gosh darn it.

My 2 year old loves Cars, Cars 2, and everything about air planes. On top of that, my 1 year old is just getting into Cars, so needless to say we are thrilled about this movie and can't wait to see it.

However we'll wait until it hits DVD, I'm not ready to take a 2 year old and 1 year old to the movies..yet.

It's not as bad as I thought! We took ours to see monsters university and they were awesome!

Change in plans, and I'm taking off work tomorrow, so probably going to take the kids to see Planes. We're all pretty excited for it.

It was reportedly cancelled, but It's back on! It's actually out October 1st 2013! :wizard:

My boys love Cars and Cars 2. We just bought our tickets on line for today in case the lines are long to see Planes. I will repost when we get back to let you know what I think. Not expecting anything spectacular but my kids couldn't wait to see it.

Thanks. I'm debating taking my son to see it this morning and the negative talk has given me pause. But what else to do on a dreary rainy day?

Everything I've heard says it is a great kids movie. Most criticism stems from the expectation that Disney movies should be enjoyed and acclaimed by all ages. The worst review I saw spent half its time questioning how the planes talk, and honestly if that's the issue, it's no wonder its been panned. Planes isn't meant to be some huge new, ground breaking, animated feature. It's a fun kids movie, so don't let those reviewers deter you!

We are seeing it at 11:35 CDT. Ill let y'all know what we think. We loved Cars -- especially the first one.

I didn't know which forum to put this in but I have seen talk about films before on here. Anyway, I must have been in a cocoon because I just saw the trailer for Disney's Planes for the first time.

My god this looks likes a gigantic piece of crap. It looks like one of those horrible direct to DVD garbage sequels that Disney was releasing every other month a few years ago. Is there anyone that has any interest in seeing this? I am a pixar/Disney film fan but I am not even going to bother renting or buying the Blu-ray for this one let alone pay to see it in a theater.

It looks like straight to DVD because it is a straight to DVD movie. Pixar was going to do it as a straight to DVD film. Then cut it. Disney picked it up. But they didn't have Feature Animation do it, they sent it to their Toons Studio.

Their Toons Studio is pefectly fine. So much goes into a film, I do not think which studio created it necessarily alway translantes to one final outcome. If the Toons Studio was incapable of producing a good film they would be out of a job.

Pixar is amazing, but even they have titles that are better loved than others. And everyone knows Disney Feature Animation has had its share of flops.

I can see how the previews might not be appealing to some. But to write such strong opinions about a movie you have not even seen reflects poorly on you.

There are many people who will want to see it. The most of which are little boys 2 to 12 (I think thats the target demographic, I forget). Little boys LOVE Cars. Planes is a natural extention of that.

Cars merch is one of their largest franchises even when a movie isn't coming out. Disney releasing this movie as feature is just smart business. Think of the boon if Planes merch takes off like Cars merch? If they released the film direct to DVD then they wouldn't have the merchandising opportunity they now have.

As a devoted Disney fan who only has boys for children. I appreciate the Planes franchise and truely hope it does well. A person can tirer of nothing but Cars and Pirates. Another franchise for boys is very welcomed.

So while Planes may not be for you. I believe it does have an audiance. Will it do numbers as big as Monsters University or the blockbuster of the summer Despicable Me 2? No, of course not. But it doesn't have to. Its production budget was only 50 million. The original Cars was 120 million and Cars 2 was 200 million.

Planes is a very smart move for Disney. They have risked relatively little, and if the movie takes off, they stand to gain a ton.

With all the different directions they could have gone with the story line, and they chose a storyline in which Mater becomes a spy? Odd.

I wanted more Radiator Springs and more from the original group of cars then a World Grand Prix.

At the time the Original Cars came out, it was one of the worst performing Pixar Movies to date. Meanwhile, the merch was flying off the shelf. Bad box office, good franchise.

Why did Cars under perform at the box office when audiances obviously enjoyed it? International grosses were pitiful.

Now Pixar/Disney has a problem. They need a sequel because the merchandise is too hot not to have one, but they also want to improve the box office on the second film.

So Pixar goes back to the film to figure out why it didn't do well oversees and decides the story is too classically american. So what does well internationally? Spy films. And it also allowed them to put the characters in several different countries. Once you know the whole story it is very obvious why Pixar made the story decision they did.

I am not saying it was right or wrong. Just answering your question about why pick a storyline with Mater as a spy.

Mater was the spy rather than Lightning because he was so well loved from the first film. So they wanted to give him a bigger role.

I may be pressing for Planes this weekend so I can avoid The Smurfs 2. :scared1:

I love this comment!!!:rotfl2:
