I'll be looking forward to whatever the team can learn about the new Disney animated movie Planes. From the previews I've seen this is not a Pixar movie but appears to be an attempt to cash in on the Cars franchise.

There has been an article/interview in the July/August issue of Air and Space (a Smithsonian publication) and a large article in the current issue of Flying.

When originally planed it was supposed to be a Pixar movie but then it changed had and disney studios took it over. Pixar felt this was too similar to cars so thats why they stopped. Disney studios thought otherwise and kept the project going. I'm going to go see it and I think it will still be a good movie but I do understand where Pixar is coming from. Well just have to wait and see what the box office says.

I love how Pixar owned by Disney and they still couldn't get them to do the movie. I guess after cars two they don't want to risk it not doing well. Maybe next year they make Disney buses where the buses in Disney world take over the park and battle the monorail.

I don't know much about the movie itself, but I can tell you that the Planes merchandise at the Disney Stores is selling pretty well.

Shows what I know. I thought it was supposed to be a sequel of sorts to the Cars movies... :confused3

Sayhello

I can't wait to see it. I loved the original Cars so I'm hoping it does have the same feel to it. The first preview I saw wasn't that great, but when I watched it again, I had a different opinion for some reason.

Going to see it at D23 on opening day!

I think the reason may be a bit more nuanced...John Lasseter and Ed Catmull have authority over all the animation groups at Disney. Planes was done by the DisneyToon group rather than the Pixar group.

In addition the original plan was to release Planes as a DVD movie, similar to the Tinker Bell movies also produced by the DisneyToon group, but Disney made a decision to release in theaters.

It's not a sequel exactly but a movie set in the same world where transportation is "alive." There is a Tow Mater short "Air Mater" that introduced Skipper, one of the characters in Planes.

I'm sure the ad campaign was intended to give you exactly that impression Tobi.

Your right I think this was going to be a straight to DVD but they decide to out it in theaters just like toy story 2.
