The sail date must be within the 2 year window or you lose the benefits.

You have to start the cruise within 2 years of purchasing the placeholder. (Apparently you used to have to complete the cruise within 2 years; now you just have to start it within 2 years.) I don't recall anyone reporting getting an exception to the 2 year rule. (If they bend the rules for one person, 5,000 people will be calling the next day.)

Indeed, the rule changed not more than 5 years ago. They are known for not making exceptions even for a few days. That’s why a lot of guests book the placeholder on the last day of the cruise.

We did a BTB last year and so were the last getting off the ship. As we went by the future cruise desk, the cast member was opening the dropbox, and he must’ve had at least 20 cards. We asked about that and he says that he’s always very busy on the changeover day taking care of all the placeholders.
