Pixie dust on our DREAM vacation! Update 06/08 TR finished!!

Actually I have been thinking about the 7 day cruise on the Fantasy but with lily being out of work it might be 2014 for us . I'm a little sad but hoping i can still swing a Solo trip late this year early next year :cool1::idea:!! we were taking to one of the security guys he said that the guy that brought in the fireworks for the Fantasy said there was less security at the White House ( im hoping he was joking ) but with everyone that was on that ship i do not know .
:cloud9:i was on cloud nine when i saw elliott in the fog :worship::worship:
thank you both that made me smile . philips poscard arrived yesterday and he could not shut up about it all day lmao it was funny :lmao:
you know with all these trips you take you should have your own Ship built ?
you can call it Imagine Big and you can put Elliott on the back of the boat ??

Oh Jeff, I still keep up hope that you might be able to make the 7 night Eastern in 2013 with us! It would be wonderful, especially as two other very special friends are cruising with us as well! :grouphug:

Thinking of your solo trip ..... what about a cruise in February 2013? February 17 would be a wonderful time ....... we would love to hug all of you again soon!
Love your comment from the security guard - well done guarding her well. :goodvibes

And I am glad Philip liked his postcard! He is such a wonderful young man! :thumbsup2 .... and what a beautiful princess Molly is!

Hm, guess I need to have Tom think about that boat idea! :rotfl2:

As usual, I am impressed by the food you receive on the plane. Long flights are no fun, but food does tend to help to make them more tolerable.

The food is pretty nice on the way to the US! But food or no food - the long flight is definitely NO fun! ;)

WOOHOO!! You're in flight now :) Yummy airline food - um, only sometimes! I've learned not to rely on it but it is a nice surprise when it's yummy! :rotfl2:

My grandparents (Oma & Opa) always believed in lucky #13 so I think of them when #13 pops up. They were married on 9/13, and everything about it had 13's in it. You've given me another reason! :thumbsup2

Uh oh, I feel a story coming on about not arriving early.... hmmm...:happytv:

Heather

Hm, you could be on to something with not arriving early ..... :rotfl2:

Many people here believe in the lucky 13! And since I know it translates into M :lmao: :lmao:

You should never rely on airplane food, it's just that sometimes you get pretty lucky too! :thumbsup2

Hi, Karin!

Saw your question to Kathy about the OKW studio and although you likely already know, wanted to mention that BLT Studios are exceptionally small and OKW studios are the largest of all DVC studios. OKW was built back in the day when Disney was very generous with room size. ;) For instance - CBR rooms are the same size as WL and AKL resort rooms...and monorail resort rooms are huge compared to the EPCOT resort rooms! First time we stayed at the then new BC we all said the same thing when we opened the door, "The room is so small!". :rotfl: At that time we'd only stayed at CR and the Poly...both fabulous and so roomy.

So! If you decide to save points by staying in an OKW studio you'll likely be fine - I'd think the hardest for a long stay would be no washer/dryer in the studio - but at least it is still free to do laundry.

We liked the location of the laundry room for studio guests at BWV the best, but those room have the one queen bed and one pull out - and I've slept on those pull outs (have rented points often over the years) for 4 to 7 nights - the old style even with that darn metal thingy was far more comfortable than the new ones...those are hard as stuffed straw...which I know about having slept on a straw mattress in my convent days!

Sorry for the interruption! :goodvibes

We learned about the BLT studios being the smallest of all DVC studios while talking to a nice DVC rep in February (Tom and I were on a mission to turn all the DVC books to DCL when we walked by. :rotfl2:)
My only concern about OKW is, that I know what's "next door"! We really LOVE those units and wherever we stay, once we open that door we really feel like being "at home".
So staying in a studio THERE won't come easy. And as long as I can somehow make a 1 br work we will! ;)

Tom always sleeps on the pullout, even though it would be very easy to share the King bed - it's HUGE, he has never complained so far :confused3 but then we are on vacation and staying at our happy place - I guess as long as I would fall asleep I would not complain either. ;)

Woo hoo for landing on time; I just hate it if our flights from the UK land late

I bet you ended up standing up in a longer line than Soarin' to get through passport control though

We usually arrive on time, but you are right, there was a bit of "hickup". :lmao:
Now the question is, HOW long was the line at immigration? :rotfl2:

I can't wait to read some more!!!!!

Welcome! :flower3:
I am glad you made it over here! I am working on my next update and hope to post it tomorrow! :goodvibes

Thanks so much for the info on the FE, what a great idea! I love it:love: How many different Disney ships have you been on and which one is your favorite? I'm so excited to see we're getting closer to your boarding the ship, and thank goodness your flight was on time! I travel alot internationally and domestically and delayed flights drive me batty! Can't wait for the next update!!!

FE is so much fun. We have done it ever since our first cruise and always had a lot of fun. Even for us "older" kids it's fun to come back and find a surprise! :woohoo:
Our first three cruises were on the WONDERful Disney WONDER. And up to now we did 4 cruises on the DREAM. Two more DREAM cruises this summer, one more in February of 2013 and then we will try the Fantasy.
I love the WONDER and DREAM equally! They are both wonderful ships. I really fell in love with the Wonder the moment we set foot on her. Much smaller ship and easier to navigate for us as beginners, but we very soon found our way around and loved being there.
Same goes for the DREAM - HUGE ship! But we were so immersed in that Disney bubble that we never felt lost of anything.
This cruise we have discovered Family Staterooms and loved the extra space and round shower!
We'll be in the same stateroom for the next four cruises!

Oh, and don't get me started on delayed flights - nothing worse!!!!!!!!!

Karin I missed seeing the Fantasy sail into PC today. I will watch it on YouTube later. :thumbsup2 I can't believe how many cruises you have been on now. I would like to sail on the Magic sometime.

Yay, you arrived a little early. Sounds like customs was slow though......

Hm ..... slow ........ you might be on the right track here! :rotfl2:

You've eaten well, slept a little and made it to Orlando. :cool1: I sense a hiccup coming up though.

Yip, hiccup coming up! Arriving at MCO is always exciting - the excitement that was to come ;) - I could have done without! :rotfl2:

Subbing and will go back to read !!

Rosie, you are here! :woohoo: It would not have been the same without you!

Karin
it is off to Chicago for me in 23 minutes i will play catch up when i return from Neices reception and i will take many picture to share :wizard:
XOXO hugs always
Jeff:wizard:

Have a wonderful trip, Jeff! I hope you will give me a little report of your trip! ;) Photos would be nice too!
Please give Lily and the kids a hug from us! :grouphug:

She was a pretty sight sailing in, sounding their Mickey Horn twice and fireworks! DCL can be pretty proud of their design (and Meyer Werft of how they built the ship!)
Teresa, looking at my Castaway Club site I cannot believe we already have 7 cruises under our belt! :scared1: And I could have sworn I would only do one in my lifetime in early 2009! :rotfl2:
Can you believe that by the time we get to cruise together we will already be Platinum? Unbelieveable!!! :cloud9:
I'd love to try all the ships. But being stuck with my school holidays it would mean that we would either NOT travel to Florida if the Magic stays in Europe, which as long as I book with the Brits is a bit odd, as I need to use the ticket I have to buy to renew my AP - the British tickets DO expire!! :scared1: And then ... the destinations the Magic travels to, we have already been to or can easily reach from here.
But one day ....... I am sure we will get to cruise on the Magic too!

Day 1, February 18

“Did you notice the castle over there?” - Part 3

Soon after they were announcing that we were descending onto MCO and we were a little early for our scheduled arrival time!
Yippie ….. or so we thought.
Once we were back on solid ground and parked at the terminal the captain announced that as much as he would love to allow all of us to leave the plane after about 10 hours of flight time, we could not leave as immigration was too full to be able to accommodate another full flight. It meant we were held on board for another half hour, :scared1: then we could finally make our way to immigration. :rolleyes1
There was still a LONG line, going back and forth across the room about 6 or 7 times and it took us about an hour to make our way to one of the booths to meet an officer.
From there on it was easy sailing.
We were welcomed, found our luggage right away and instead of dropping it off to be delivered to the area where the rental cars are we hauled them ourselves, as usually it takes quite long for luggage to arrive there.
We headed over to the Hertz booth to pick up a rental car and since we had a prepaid voucher the sales person there tried to talk us into upgrading our car.
Well, it would sit in the parking lot at Port Canaveral for four days, so there was no way to do that. And after a very short while we headed over to the car park, picked up our car,

IMG_3368.jpg

placed everything in the trunk and off we went. It only took about half an hour and we went under that well known and well loved sign that meant we had finally arrived.

IMG_0600.JPG

There was just one more stop we wanted to make before heading to our final destination for that night, the Hess gas station.
No, our car was not out of gas, but we wanted to stock up on a few drinks, so we would have something while staying at WDW and to take along for the cruise.
Once we were done shopping we drove over to the Polynesian and showed our reservation confirmation, were handed a parking pass and giving instructions on where to park for check in and were sent off with a nice smile.

And here is where I guess I need to explain WHY we had ended up at the Polynesian in the first place. We had booked a Royal Room at Port Orleans Riverside and were very much looking forward to it. When an AP discount became available I had jumped on the opportunity as it had brought the bill down to a mere 200$ for said Princess Room with a river view. A few weeks before we were supposed to leave for Florida I received a call from Guest Relations, letting me know that the Royal Rooms would not be ready when we arrived and that we could choose any other resort we wanted too, except for the Contemporary Resort and Bay Lake Tower. At first I didn’t know what to ask for but when they offered the Polynesian for our already discounted rate I really jumped at the opportunity. While the Polynesian had always seemed to be a nice resort I never quite could get myself to hand over the money they charge per night – staying at a resort that charged about $600 a night (non discounted) for a mere $200 dollars sounded perfect and we got to try yet another resort.

Now, after parking our car in the 30 minute, check-in zone, we walked over to the front desk, paperwork in hand.
I had always thought that people checking in there were greeted with a lei, but no such thing.
The friendly but otherwise very business like Cast Member checking us in just handed us our folder, which had been pre-prepared as we had done the online check in, and sent us on our way.
On the way out we stopped at Bell Services and asked how we could retrieve our purple storage box from Owner’s Locker. The guy there asked me about three times what I was talking about, then got another Cast Member who was clueless as well.
We went back to the front desk and inquired there and they again pointed us towards Bell Services. Finally on third attempt we found a Cast Member who knew what we were talking about and said she would send someone to have a look and send it over to our room, but it would be a while.
At that time we were still deciding if we would lateron head over to the Magic Kingdom until 1am, but before hauling our luggage we wanted to have a look at the room. We must have chosen the long route as this seemed to be a much longer walk than any other we did lateron.

To be continued ..........

I see the word 'update' in your TR title and I am a happy lady :goodvibes

Doesn't look like the check in process at the Poly was all that great; I dream of staying there one day so I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts

:woohoo: Happy Linda! :woohoo:
Even though there aren't many photos in this update.

To be honest, I wasn't really impressed with the Poly check in and we will not hurry back to the Poly any time soon.
Don't get me wrong, the resort is beautiful, but for us it lacks that "my heart skips a beat when I think about it" factor. ;)

What a terrible way to welcome you to the Poly. We had the opposite experience in August. They were very friendly and we were all given a lei.

The Poly was always a dream of mine, but unaffordable. We were able to stay there because we won a sweepstakes- awesome!:cool1:

congrats on winning! :woohoo:

It wasn't really terrible, just not magical either. :goodvibes

Like you, at the start of our WDW vacations, more than 10 years ago I really wanted to stay at the Poly too, but the price was just too much. Over the years my interests shifted and we have other favourite resorts.
But it was nice to stay there at the price of a discounted moderate. ;)

The Poly is also too expensive for our travel budget so it is always enjoyable to read about others staying there. I am glad you were able to visit the resort without paying the big bucks, especially since it was not a "wow" experience.

I was shocked when I went on the Disney site and checked out how much it would be! NO way would we have paid that for a night during President's week.
It's a nice resort, just not one that makes my heart skip a beat! ;)

Well shoot...I was so hoping you would not have that experience with Poly. :( Unfortunately, mine have been the same almost from our first Poly stay in 1982. Nevertheless, it does feel like my home resort and I do so love it there...kind of like OKW for you & Tom. ;) We have found many wonderful CM's at the Poly over the years, but check-in is not the place. Last time she (the CM) was not even pleasant and very close to downright rude. Every stay we have had to ask for a room change at check-in - because since 1982, no matter what we request we are assigned the exact same room as the first stay! 1st floor, overflowing shrubs on the patio and a view of nothing - same Longhouse, same room every time! :rotfl::confused3

Hope the Poly herself made up for the lack of check-in & bell service CM's. ::yes::

For me, I just love the South Seas feeling, the sound of the MK train, the Electrical Water Pageant at night and feeling just a bit more immersed in the magic being on the monorail. We rarely have a car, so that helps the total immersion. Of course, many memories of stays with my from the time they were 7 & 8 until they were 13 & 14 helps too.:cloud9:

I cannot believe that you had so many mediocre experiences at check-in at the Poly!! :scared1:
And to be given the same room over and over again ..... didn't they realize that you DON'T like it, since you changed it every time?
(And believe me they DO keep track of a lot of things. One of the headservers on the DREAM could even tell us the table number we had had during previous cruises - well, he was looking at his computer, so I guess this is where his wisdom was from. ;))
As I mentioned before, the resort is beautiful - the landscaping is wonderful, but it is just not for me. :confused3
And we didn't stay long enough to enjoy the sight of the Monorail or the Water Pageant.
But having memories of your family staying there is by sure the best thing to make it your favourite resort!

Bummer of a wait and check in after an already crazy long travel day!

Did you find it to be a better deal to just keep the car during the cruise? I am curious as we are going a different route. We have 5 nights at Vero before so have a car for that part, are returning it at the port and then getting a new one when we disembark. Or did it just make more sense so you could keep things in it that you didn't need on the ship? Just curious.

The Poly has never really been on my list. I love the location and I really enjoy dining there but I think b/c we are close(r) to Hawaii and have been, will go back, we'd rather just experience that kind of theming actually in Hawaii. But I can certainly understand why folks love it and what a great way to try it out!

Yes, being stuck on the plane is NO fun! :sad2: But we made it in the end. ;)

We booked our car with "autoeurope" which has all the insurances included and covers three drivers and a full tank of gas and it would have pretty much cost the same if we had changed cars or kept it. (a 1 day rental and a 3 day one) We would have had to pay owner's locker for a second visit, had we returned it - so it was easy to just put everything in the trunk.
What we did not figure in was the 75$ parking fee at Port Canaveral. We just figured it would be more convenient to keep the car.

For our summer trip we will definitely return the ca and rent a new one for the second part. Makes no sense to have it sitting there in the parking lot for 9 days!

I was far more excited staying at BLT than the Poly. And we will definitely return to BLT next February! The Tower and the view were awesome! :thumbsup2

We adore the Poly and have stayed concierge twice. First experience in 2010 was absolutely amazing! They greeted us when we pulled up placed leis around our neck, and walked us to Hawaii building where we were checked in while seated with a gorgeous view of the castle! The whole 8 nights were like a dream.

Last yr we pull up and they ignore us, I go to the bell desk let them know we are their to check into conceirge and the lady just tells me to go into the GCH, I tell her no, we are suppose to be escorted to the Hawaii building to check in. She tells us to follow her walks in GCH and tells someone at the desk and walks off. The lady at the desk tells us she will walk us over and never speaks to us again. Then in the Hawaii building the CM wouldnt even let my DH sit with me to check in she kept sending him up to the lounge! She repeatedly told me I was very early and I explained it was noted we would be there at 7 and it was 730 which she did verify.

Anyway takes a long time checking us in and tells me Ill get a text when room is ready. Finally at 4 when we still hadnt heard anything my DS and DH go back while my DD and I went to GF to shop. When my Dh asked about our room, the same lady goes, Oh your room was ready when you left??? DS and DH go to the room and realize the door wouldnt even shut! At this point DH is livid and calls for a manager.

Manger was very apologetic and moves us to a theme park view (we had garden) on the second floor which was amazing but it was still going down hill from there..

One moved to our new room my DS realizes his brand new ray bans are gone, so we go to the conceirge desk, which we are told that she will check the old room in a little while she was alone and couldnt leave the desk. Two hrs later we go back and she tells us she didnt see any ray bans!!!

Dh again asks for a manager, we got a different one who tells us that we already got ugraded for free he wasnt sure how to make us happy??? DH says he wants DS glasses back, DS paid for them himself! He tells us he will send security to file a report. Another two hours later two show up, a guard and someone above him. She explains they have to take a detailed report and then in a week we can call this number to finish filing the claim. While we are explaing what happened the male guard interrupted to say" Didnt you come last yr and loose sunglasses?" We told him no we were here the same time last yr but didnt loose anything. We went on with our story.. He asks us the same question two more times!! BY this time I was in tears b/c I felt like he was insinuating and rude, his supervisor never said a word!

When we got home I sent Disney a long email, I got one call saying they would look into it and call back, that was Sept and still no call..

DH said we would never stay at the Poly again, but now that he is calm we decided we would give it another chance b/c it is so lovely and relaxing normally..

Wow! What an experience! :sad2:
I cannot believe what you had to go through last year! And then being accused that you were just "staging" your son's lost sunglasses! Unbelievable!
I do understand what you mean by going back and giving it another chance after "some water under the bridge", since you love it so much! I would too! ;)

But your experience sounds a lot like the one we had had at Coronado Springs last year!
We had had a wonderful time the year before, upgraded to a "double" water view (quiet pool and lake) and a lovely corner room on the second floor (I absolutely LOVE higher floors). Now, last year we arrived ... I had notified them that we would arrive early, fully aware that our room would not be ready.
We went to online check in and instead of a friendly smile the CM looked into her computer and all she said was ..... you still owe some money!!! :scared1: We were on an AP reservation and it only requires a deposit and you pay the rest at check in. I told her no problem, you already got my CC on fire and she gave us a really dirty look.
We politely asked if there was a mention of the higher floor request and she said yes, but it it NOT guaranteed!
Needless to say the room is not ready, since we do not carry a US phone they will not call us when it is ready, but we are "allowed" to call them. We checked back all day until 3.30 and NOT ready. At 3.30 we headed out to Port Canaveral to wave goodbye to the Disney Dream and only returned around 8pm when we finally had a room .... GROUND floor!!!!!!! Yes, I knew it was not guaranteed, but after all that waiting you would have thought that there would have been a second floor room.
All week our room was not serviced until early evening ..... but when we checked out, there was a knock at the door asking us "to get out". :rotfl2:
The resort is still beautiful, and we will return some day, just not right now.

Day 1, February 18

“Did you notice the castle over there?” - Part 4

We must have chosen the long route as this seemed to be a much longer walk than any other we did lateron.
We finally found our room and turned on all the light fixtures, as it seemed a bit dark to us, but still nice. And we were greated by a Mickey Head on the bed, so that made us very happy anyway.

The room was nice, we could see the pool from the balcony and it was now about time we headed down to get our luggage. For a moment we thought about our locker being delivered in the meantime, but the Bell Service Cast Member had said it would be a while, so we did not expect it right away and off we went. Tom put the car into another parking slot, we got all our things out and off we went again.
Back in the room we discussed where to have dinner while we were waiting for Bell Services. After a while Tom noticed that the message light was on at the phone.
Needless to say they had tried to deliver the box and we had not been in the room. So I called again, we promised to stay put and about 10 minutes later our box was delivered.
While still waiting for the box we walked out onto the balcony admiring the view and suddenly Tom pointed to our right and said, “Did you notice that you can see the castle over there?” I was in awe! This room was supposed to be Garden View room and I was expecting to see landscaping, and here we were with a view of the pool and a direct view of the castle as our balcony was the last one towards the castle.
It could not have been any better than this. Sure, Pixie dust must have been sprinkled on us! pixiedust:
There were only a few more minutes until the fireworks were supposed to start, so we got some drinks and Tom got his camera ready and we sat on our balcony and watched the fireworks.
It was an awesome sight and a wonderful and relaxed feeling and the perfect start to our vacation.

Once the fireworks were over we were talking about heading over to the park once again, but we both were really tired, having been up for about 25 hours, so while Tom stayed in the room I headed over to Captain Cooks to get some dinner.
I knew there was one item we both wanted to share –

IMG_3362.jpg

IMG_3363.jpg

IMG_3365.jpg

the Aloha Pork Sandwich. Pulled Pork in a roll, topped with tomato and cucumber, served with Poly Chips.
We had decided on two items and so I was thinking about what we might possible like too. And then the Pulled Pork topped Nachos peaked my interest. Now how much can that be for under 10$?

Well, the portion was huge when it was finally assembled. I asked for a lid to be put on top and they kindly put it into a carrier bag and I was on my way back to our room.
When I returned Tom had set the table and we were having a very late dinner watching TV. Now, both portions were huge and we could have easily had shared only one of them. There were quite a few leftovers. At around midnight we both crawled into bed, but the time change was soon to catch up with us again.

To be continued ..........

It doesn't seem right that Tom isn't driving a mustang or camaro. :)

I'm sorry your check in wasn't the best. The room and food look good though.:thumbsup2

I have always wanted to stay at the Poly, but the cost just drives me away. Even if I managed to save for it, a one bedroom at AKL will cost about the same. AKL gives us that  feeling, just like OKW for you. I am happy to hear that not everyone LOVES the Poly because I always feel like I am missing out. I think we'll stick to AKL and just book a breakfast or dinner at the Poly.

I'm sorry to hear that you both are not feeling well. I hope you feel better soon!
