Pirates of the Caribbean auction scene to change

No, because as I explained in a previous post, the actual murder isn't shown...it's more "alluded" to. I'm not adverse to a scary storyline....as I *tried* to explain earlier (apparently not so well, lol) it's more of the jolt of reality that I don't like. Others disagree.

Or the suicide directly portrayed in the stretching room?

This isn't about Haunted Mansion. It's not about Jungle Cruise. Can you explain why a scene that shows human beings being led into sexual slavery is something that should be applauded & kept for all time - without bringing up ANY other attraction, and focusing ONLY on the scene in question?
It's just a ride that isn't meant to be taken as seriously as you are taking it, that's why.

I drew the parallel to Haunted Mansion to illustrate that. Haunted Mansion shows murder in a lighthearted way. No one is meant to take it seriously as real-life murder, though- we enjoy it as ghoulish fun.

Likeways, POTC shows pirating, which includes murder, torture, kidnapping, and theft, in a lighthearted way. No one is meant to take it seriously as real-life murder, real-life torture, real-life kidnapping, real-life theft, etc. But we enjoy a cariacature of the spectacle from a safe distance during the ride.

I'm sorry you don't like me bringing a parallel into my reasoning. You bring a parallel into yours, as well, when you compare a theme park ride to sexual slavery. So, what's good for the goose must be good for the gander.

Taking a step back, after reading (most of) this thread I find it really fascinating how Disney is able to be beloved and sacred to all walks of life. It really speaks to the power of Walt Disney's legacy, as a storyteller and myth maker, to touch something deeper in all of us.

So, to answer my question, you cannot. Gotcha.

I also don't think it keeps people from coming now.
And that sword cuts both ways. If attendance won't be impacted either by keeping the scene or changing the scene, then doesn't the decision simply become one of decency? If an equal amount of money can be earned by showing something distasteful versus showing something more tasteful, what would compel anyone to choose the distasteful option? The only answer is tradition and nostalgia and economically, those are not worth very much if they are tethered to controversial content. I doubt that attendance was affected by the removal of the dead homesteader with the arrow protruding from his body from an Indian attack but it is easy to see why that decision was made.

This thread is AMAZING. Never expected to read such a topical discussion on a trip planning board. All the characters came to play, like it was cast on purpose. :)

I will answer your question since you asked, but then I'm probably out of this thread because some of your answers on pages after my post lead me to think that you're more interested in stirring the pot than anything else. If I am wrong, please accept my apologies.

I draw the line here because for riders, the pirates are the protagonists. Since the post film revisions to the ride, there are two groups of pirates, but we are rooting for pirates nonetheless. And in 2017, there is a line to be drawn between theft and human trafficking even in a make-believe story.
Do I object to HM? No. But we aren't rooting for the bride. We are watching her story. She is the antagonist.
Do I object to IASW? No. And I haven't googled any dissenting opinions, but the overall theme of the attraction is celebration of all the world's children. If a group felt that their nation's children were being unfairly portrayed, I would hope that their voice would be heard.

YMMV. Have fun and good night.

ETA: This was meant to be a reply to Lchuck's question to me on page 5, but the quote didn't work. Sorry.

I have to agree with @Shanti
I've toured the Laura Plantation where the Brer Rabbit stories originated. They were written/told by an African-American slave on the plantation and originally recorded/written utilizing his vocabulary/dialect/vernacular.

If it is racist, he is being racist to his own people/family/friends.

All I can say is WOW. Slavery was terrible, it wasn't a fun time. Often slaves were whipped if their Master found out they could read and write.
Please don't put a pretty bow on slavery and act like people were happy, they wasn't. Children ripped away from their mothers sold to other plantations. Slaves had to endure a lot.

I'm happy to see it go. It's always made me uncomfortable -- both as a woman and as an overweight woman. It's no fun to be the fat girl in the boat when everyone around you is laughing at the large "wench" who isn't even "good enough" to be sold.

Wow, must have been really bad for the Laura Plantation I mentioned above to have family members of former slaves still living on the property as late as the 1970s out of CHOICE. Unless you and I were there when it happened, we can't actually say what it was really like. There are 2 sides to every story.
