pirates league question

Can someone tell me more about the Pirate's League- is it where they make you up as a pirate? I would love more details as I have all boys so the princess thing is out! I have read that it is 50% now costing $25 (per person I am assuming). What does that entail? Can you do any of it without paying? Any info would be great!
