My DD is drum major of her HS marching band. Our theme this year is Pirates of the Carribean and they are all very excited! We have started to look for costumes for our DM's (there is one other). They want to look authentic but we don't want to spend a small fortune. We've tried searching the internet but haven't really found what they are looking for (and you have to be really careful when you type in pirate costumes). DD is looking for Capt Jack Sparrow type outfit especially his hat. Has anyone who has been at WDW lately seen any there? If anyone has any ideas of where to look we would really appreciate the help!!!

Hmm, I knew my hours of internet search for sexy pirate costume last Halloween would pay off.

How much are you wanting to spend? This time of year the internet costume sites are going to be the easiest way to get a costume. But with basics and accessories, you can easily run up to $40-$50. Unfortunately, with most costumes, the key to being instantly recognized is the accessories. Your basic pirate costume is going to give you pants, puffy shift, and maybe a sash. You need the other stuff, like eye patch, hook (not good for a drummer, I guess) and that hat in order to really look pirate.

If I was going for the Jack sparrow look, here's what I'd do. Try to find or borrow a white puffy shirt, black pants, a black waist coat, and boots. No one is going to remember the details, so they don't have to be exactly right. Then spend money on a costume pirate tricorned hat from some place like buycostumes.com. Make or buy a colored sash. Use makeup for a stubbley look. Buy a cheap eyepatch if it won't interfer with the band. And then fill in with whatever gaudy costume jewelry you can borrow.

We have an obsessive drum major here that insists on looking authentic (Jack Sparrow). The hats online aren't any where near his hat and even if the audience didn't know the difference we have fanatic Pirates of the Carribean fans as drum majors. She is talking about making costumes but finding patterns that work hasn't been possible yet. Thanks for the help!!

Looks like you have your work cut out for you. Maybe she'd agree to go with the sash on the head look. I've seen a few stills from the movie where's he's just wearing that.

Didn't realize it was a girl either! As authentic as she gets the hat, I don't think people will realize who is it if she doesn't go with the hair, mustache, and eyeliner :)

Well if you are really loaded and have money to throw....

hahaha. Just tell her its 'just' a parade and no one will really be paying attention that closely.
My daughter is also a pirate in a parade this year - but she wanted to be a 'pink pirate'. hahaha. She is 8 - so we did black pants, bit white shirt, pink sash and pink bandana on her head. Total cost $3 from the thrift shop for the shirt and sash!

Oh, it's not just a parade!! It's the show for this year and we have some very stiff competition this year. I know most people wouldn't know the difference. I just have a very obsessive DD when it comes to Pirates!
