Pirate Ship at Castaway Cay

it was taken down because it was starting to rot apparently, it was just a prop never a perminent structure. Good place to store it though i was hoping they didn't take it down, would have been nice to see next week when we sail.

It has been gone for a long time. As above, it was intended as a movie prop, never built to withstand years of exposure to the sea water, waves, etc.

It was fun while it was there, but the story we were told is that it was so damaged that Disney was concerned about safety as parts broke off, etc.

I thought it had been designed as a proper ship or was that just HMS Sunset

The Black PearlEdit

The Sunset as the Black Pearl.
Added by Eduardo Villanueva
During the making of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the original Black Pearl was basically a set built from the hull up on top of a barge, which was towed into position for filming. For the back-to-back productions of Dead Man's Chest and At World's End, because the barge would take forever to line up, the producers felt it was in their best interest to build the Black Pearl as a seaworthy vessel.[1]
Eight months prior to the start of principal photography, production designer Rick Heinrichs was given the task of creating the new Black Pearl. To speed its construction, Heinrichs built the Black Pearl around the Sunset; which was docked in Bayou La Batre, Alabama. The result was that from the waterline up you had the pirate ship, with the Sunset still in there somewhere, with engines, fuel and water tanks, a galley and bunks.[1]

Sorry to see it go too! I remember when it was installed the end of June 2006. It looked great. But you could clearly see it had no " guts".

i was just at castaway cay last friday. i overheard a person ask a officer about the ship. the officer lied to them i had to interupt and set the record straight.

What did they say?
Were they just trying to keep the "Magic" alive over yes it was rusting, sinking, rotting and falling apart so we had to break it up?

I knew sunset had been used for the pearl and then for QAR but I thought the dutchman had been built so she could be sailed and used for promotional work

What a bummer that it is gone. We were on the first cruise that it was at CC, I had hoped to see it again on our next trip.

I got one also, bit from shoreside. I asked about the Dutchman, testing a rumor I had heard from a different CM. I was told that the Dutchman was out plying the seas plundering and pillaging. That went only as far as the time it took for me to tell her I had seen pics of her being broken up.

No. The Dutchman was based on a barge, or a purpose built barge. The left side of the ship was never completed, and you could look into and under the decks. She was pretty much hollow. During filming, she was pulled by a small tug or boat, and the tow line and and the port side that was open, was digitally corrected.

Ill have to go back and try and find my port side pics of her from CC.

It is currently at the Aulani resort in Hawaii being rebuilt and put back together for the next pirates movie! :goodvibes

that would be the HMS Sunset which was used as the black pearl and then as the Queen Anne's Revenge which is what you have seen of the ship in hawaii
as a side note has anyone seen the subs from 20000 leagues under the sea ride at wdw as I have heard rumours that they have been removed

No the one in Hawaii that is "behind the scenes" is the ship for CC. There may be others but what I am referring to is the ship from CC. Its not kept for the public to see, my dad saw it because the job his company was working on is there.

Sorry but you are wrong. The ship that was at CC was dismantled. It was moved to the other-side of the Island so you couldn't see if from the ground but if you got up on the top of the ship you could.

Here is a picture of it as it was being dismantled:

Actually the Queen Anne revenge and Perl were both built on a barge. The Perl was rebuilt for the send an third films on a barge with an engine in it so they could move it around easier for filming. For the forth film they redressed it as the queen Anne's revenge. The HMS Sunset was used as Barbosas ship in the 4th movie and was only filmed of the cost of California.

The flying Dutchman was only partly built on a barge the rest was filled in with CGI. When filming warped DCL bought the ship from Walt Disney Productions knowing full well that i may not be able withstand the weather conditions that can happen at Castaway Cay .

The original Pearl was on a barge. After the first movie, the movie company acquired the Sunset which was used as a sailing vessel but also had engines in it for propulsion. After At Worlds End, the Pearl/sunset went to Hi, to be converted to the Queen Annes Revenge. It was basically show props added to the Pearl/Sunset to change her appearance.

"Director Gore Verbinski describes the Black Pearl as being "newly refurbished" for Pirates 2 and 3, but it's actually much more than that. The filmmakers scrapped the original ship, which wasn't really a ship at all. It was a set built from the hull up on top of a barge, which was towed into position for filming. "The barge sort of bobbed in the water and would take forever to line up," says co-star Lee Arenberg, who plays the pirate Pintel. And time is money. So, the producers felt it was in their best interest to build The Black Pearl as a seaworthy vessel."

The Dutchman was built entirely on a barge and completed to about 80% exteriorly. The left hull was never completed or the below decks. The bow, stern and starboard side were completed as you see in the movies. Ill have to go home tom to find the pics I took of her before she was broken up.
