My experience only......upon departing Providence last week, I told the person prior to going through the xray machine, that my bag contained a decorative pin collection. They ran it through the machine and then took the bag and opened it and looked through every pin. It took only about an extra five or ten minutes. The security guard said he collected coins and understood my trepidation about checking the bag through.
Upon departing MCO, I decided not to mention what was in the carryon and they never even looked at it. Now maybe they see so many pin collections going through that it doesn't faze them. I was not about to chance checking this back and was not inconvenienced at all.

Thanks for the info, we leave on the 19 and have 2 large pin bags. Don't want to put in checked bags I could never replace most of these pins, we were thinking of just bring a small bag and leaving the rest at home but it is so much fun so share the pins with other people. We thought about fedex them down but I think we will just carry them.

Others spoke of Fedex as an alternative, but to me, it's exactly the same as checking them through. Most Fedex is shipped via planes and I wouldn't want the package x-rayed and then confiscated because it contained a great deal of metal and no one there to explain just exactly why an adult woman would be carrying forty pounds of sharp pointed items. I left quite a few pins at home but took several that were eye catchers and lots to trade. I was just very uncomfortable with the idea of having them out of my reach. We still had a great time and did tons of trading. Have fun!! 54 days 'til we're back!
