My experience only......upon departing Providence last week, I told the person prior to going through the xray machine, that my bag contained a decorative pin collection. They ran it through the machine and then took the bag and opened it and looked through every pin. It took only about an extra five or ten minutes. The security guard said he collected coins and understood my trepidation about checking the bag through.
Upon departing MCO, I decided not to mention what was in the carryon and they never even looked at it. Now maybe they see so many pin collections going through that it doesn't faze them. I was not about to chance checking this back and was not inconvenienced at all.
