LOTS of experience here.

Even though I live near WDW, I still do my trading through Pinpics. Just never had the time nor inclination for pin meets and face to face trading. And the few times I have traded in person, I get home and find out I already had the pin.
I get a lot of TA requests, and a lot that are traders offering gift with purchase and lanyard pins for my LE pins. (Most often low or HTF LEs.)
I was getting so many, I just now delete those requests without replying. When they are just on the ridiculous level, I have decided they don't even warrant my time or attention to reply.
Generally I try to respond to requests, either Yes or No. And I don't get snippy. Most traders don't. But occasionally you will get a rude response. So don't take it personally. It happens eventually.
And eventually you will have a bad trader. Out of the hundreds I have done I have been burned probably only a half dozen times. So the odds are good.
Others will inquire about your references.
Once I receive my trade pin, I e-mail the trader and let them know, and I leave a reference.
I only leave references for trades I am happy with. And I leave the reference right away to get it out of the way. Some leave them for a month or quarter. To me, that just makes a project out of it.
I have found it is very hard to judge how another values a pin. But at least try to offer something that is a fair trade. Or you can comment that you will trade multiple for their pin, "feel free to look at my other traders", etc.
And you can turn off your Trade Asst if you don't want to trade, will be out of town, etc.
Mail your pins with padding, and in a padded envelope. I include my name, e-mail address, mailing address, etc, in the envelope too.
I am Omega on Pinpics.
