My son had an MRI earlier this year for sudden onset of stuttering. The neurologist called me shortly thereafter and said the test results were perfect, nothing wrong at all. We are switching pediatricians so I wasn't sure what his old ped. had in the file, so I requested the test results of his various tests from the neuro just to have for the new ped. (CT scan, 24 hour EEG, MRI).

Anyway, looking at the result of the MRI it says he has a 1cm pineal cyst. Everything I've looked at online says it's typically nothing and sometimes common in children, but why wouldn't the neuro tell me this? It's really bothering me that she didn't. I understand they don't want parents to worry about something that is nothing, but if it were to grow, or if he were to exhibit other symptoms, I would *want* to know the findings of this initial MRI in case it was related. Am I wrong in thinking that way?

mostly because so many people have them. It's almost never a problem, and if it WERE a problem, you;d know it for sure. My dd has all kinds of neuro troubles, and pineal gland cyst (2.2 cm) was found on her MRI at age 2. Now, hers is at the upper edge of "normal size", so it is left alone too...with warnings that it's nearly large enough to block cerebrospinal fluid. THAT would be bad. So if hers grows at all, there WILL be severe symptoms (of that blocked fluid). Really, though, most people with pineal gland cysts go through life never knowing they have one. That's how common and insignificant they are.

They may be common and insignificant however omittig that information from you is completely infuriating.

I would never go back to that neuro again.:sad2:

They are so common that sometimes they aren't even listed in the reports. I have a brain MRI done at least once a year, if not twice. Sometimes it's listed in the reports and sometimes not. If it was large or unusual than I'm sure it would have been mentioned to you.
I remember how unnerved I was the first time I found out about it.

I have one..they found it about 6 years ago. They have NO concerns about it other than they can grow and cause issues if they press on other spots of the brain. I am to have an MRI every 5 years or so which I did last summer and no change. It is a very common anomaly..and I imagine often not mentioned. My Radiologist is a good friend..I am sure that might be the only reason I know about mine?:confused3
