My DH is severely allergic to pine nuts. We also found out( the hard way) that pesto is made from pine nuts. Which resturants should we stay away from?

Boma is your biggest danger zone!

I'm severly allergic to pine nuts as well, and have been accomodated and felt "safe" just about everywhere but there.

BTW--sometimes pesto is made with walnuts, other times pine nuts. Always err on the side of caution. I've also seen them in other places you wouldn't expect to find them, including caesar salad.

Generally doctors will tell you if you allergic to one you need to avoid all. Does he carry an Epi-pen. He really should if he doesn't. I don't go anywhere without mine.

Thank ducklite, I was hoping you would reply. I did a search for pinenuts and read one of your posts stating that you were allergic to pine nuts too. This seems to be the only nut so far. I just got the Epipen perscription renewed. I usually carry one.

In 2003 we were at the CP I thought something might have been pesto. I asked the CM and she had the chef come to out table just as my DH was about to eat some other thing that was made with pine nuts. That was too close for me.

I'm glad you told me about Boma's because my DSIL and DBIL wanted us to join them for dinner with some of DSIL's family. I think I'll skip that and keep our ADR at WCC.

Sorry ducklite one more this. I see that MM is a favorite of yours in your tag. Pine nut free??

I was actually just going to reply, warning about the dip served with the bread at MM and Tony's. It used to be a sun dried tomato pesto; I make the recipe at home...

Anne, are you saying that it's not at MM anymore? that's good for anyone with pinenut allergies, but if so, means that I'll just need to make more myself here at home!

I wouldn't stay away from any restaurants that the menu looks good at... UNLESS there's a reason why he can't even be that close to the pine nuts... My grown DD is very allergic to peanuts and when we made our ADR's we told the CM about the allergy. They will make a note of it and the chef will come out (buffets also) and go over each menu item and will bring you through the full buffet to tell you what to stay away from... In fact, the chefs at most of the restaurants suggested to stay away from certain desserts because they "may" contain the nut/s that you're allergic to (just to be on the safe side) My DD had no problems at all. You can also get a person to answer questions of allergic foods at the CS areas...

The last time we ate there (early January this year) we were told all pine nuts had been removed from the menu. Thinking back I might have been warned away from the dipping oil, but it might have been due to walnuts instead of pine nuts. I'm sure not pine nuts though, because even having them on the table with me would have caused hives.

Which works fine at "most" buffets, but at Boma the use of nuts is so pervasive it's almost impossible to avoid cross contamination.

The Kona cafe is another danger zone, but I've been able to safely eat many meals there. There isn't a single nut free dessert there.
