Going in June w/my daughter & 4 1/2 yr old GS, and I think he would get a kick out of pin trading, but I have no idea how it's done? Should I just buy him a lanyard & some pins in Disney and then what? does he wear it and people come up to you to trade? Is there someplace I can pick up a bunch of pins to get him started so when we go he already has a few? Fill me in on this Pin-trading thing, is he too young?

I will tell what we do. We are not serious pin traders, we do it for fun. We buy ours in bulk on Ebay for about $1 each. You can bid on lots of 20, 50 whatever, or some have "buy it now" at about $1.25 each. As long as they have Disney on the back, they are tradable. Don't buy them at a store with the intent to trade, it will cost you a fortune!

We only trade with CMs, but you can trade with other guests. CMs hold out their lanyard for you to examine and you can pick what you want by pointing (you aren't supposed to encroach the CMs' space:)) to it. Then you can choose which pin to give the CM as long as they don't already have it. At some resorts they will have a cork board set up at certain times that are covered with pins to trade. They also have a brochure on the ins and outs of trading.

Have fun with it! I think your DGS will enjoy this, even at his age. Buy a bunch of them when you do, you will probably run out if you don't!

He can wear the lanyard, but my kids get itchy from it. We leave ours in the room and carry loose pins around with us for fast trading.

ETA: Another tip. You may have so much fun doing this with him, that you might want some of your own pins to trade! It's addicting, that's why we never buy pins in a store with intent to trade.

Ditto _exactly_ what HRH-Disney said. We got a bunch off Ebay and then my boys used some of their souvenier trip money to buy others (those are usually special 'keepers', but sometimes they trade those too). Heck, I never expected it, but I also got into it....only seek out certain ones; but its still fun.

We got our boys lanyards at Target - the $1 section - but lots of places have cheap ones. Walmart is supposed to have nice ones w/ the plastic pouches on the end (nice for room cards - I used to put our hotel/phone number info in it, so if my little one got lost he could show it to whoever found him...)

We also only trade w/ CM's, or each other! :)

Have fun!!!! He will love it - I was happy how it makes the kids less shy and they chat w/ the CM's sometimes.

:yay::wave2:long time no see!

I won't let my kids trade a pin they (I) paid full price for. I just can't let them do it! We have so many from Ebay it hasn't been a real point of discussion.

I buy a lot of 20 or so every couple of months. I think I have about 100 traders for our week in August. It sounds like a lot, but some days we trade 6-7 pins each!

I have been trading for years. I hate the lanyards. They get very heavy after a day at the parks and I am always afraid they would come off. I keep them in my fanny pack ready to trade. You go up to a cm if they are wearing a lanyard and you ask if you can see their pins. They hold out their lanyards so you can see them better. Then if you see one you would like, they will trade you for it. The only time they won't trade is if they already have the same pin, if the pin is broken, if the pin is personalized with a person's name. You are allowed to trade two pins per cm. If they are wearing a green lanyard they can only trade with a child. Some cm's have the pins on their hips so look out for those. Best bet is to buy in lots on ebay. As long as the pin has disney stamped on the back it is tradeable. It is addicting.

No clue how to do E-bay, is there another place I can get these pins?

Ebay is super simple, but there are other websites where pins are more like $3-4 each. You could go to Ebay and do a search to look at what I am talking about and maybe someone you know can buy them for you or you could sign up.

Or you can go to this Dis forum and find out which online stores are best. http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=37

I have bought pins from mousepinsonline.com and have been happy with them.

He may be a little young at 4 to really get into trading. Start with a couple and see how it goes. DD started at 6 and traded a few times and then got bored and didn't want the Lanyard around her neck, so we ended up with yet another thing to carry.

can anyone tell me a reputable dealer on ebay to buy from? I tried once and never got the pins so I have been hesitant to try ebay again. Thanks!

I just ordered last week from a person on ebay, theatreandfilms. Paid $20 for a lot of 30, free ship, arrived within 3 days. My kids got som pins on our last trip so I was just looking to get a lot that they could use to trade this time. Then I spent too much time on this board and ordered another lot from mouseenabler and had the same good experience.

It's so fun to watch th kids sort out the new pins and get the excited for our trip

My daughter started "pin trading" at about 2 1/2. She would walk up to a CM and say "pin please". It was good for her as she was learning to be polite and interact with others in a safe environment. We continue this and she loves to trade now at 4 1/2 and is so excited to go back and do it some more. My son, 3 1/2 just started pin trading in December. We adopted him in August from another country so he didn't speak much english. But after watching his sister he would go up and try to say "pin". He really enjoyed it too.

My kids do wear lanyards but they only have a few pins on them. Any pins that we trade for, that we want to keep, I put up in my backpack. I don't like the lanyard at all so I keep a pocketful for trading for all of us.

This has been a fun family activity that we talk about after each trip. She remembers some of where her pins came from and what pins she has.

I usually order them off of Ebay for us to trade. I don't usually buy them in the parks unless it is a special occassion like the Halloween party or the Christmas party.

Santa and the Easter Bunny have brought my kids pins. My daughter loves that they know that she loves to pin trade!

OMG, this is me! Pin trading threads give me the itch to go to ebay and buy more! I just received an order of a lot of 20 for $16 from theaterandfilms and I am very happy with it! I have also purchased from tinkerbelle102, 4auburn, wdwpins4you, and parrotsandpins.. I haven't had one bad experience buying pins on ebay, except I did receive a few Euro Disneys which are completely tradeable in my experience. I don't think they were from any of these sellers, for sure not from the first two.

I am so psyched on this now! I am going to get a lanyard and some pins (I will see if someone I know does E-bay) I know I have an old lanyard w/pins that I collected (never traded) from years ago, should I use those pins to trade or are they probably collectable ones now since they are probably 20+ years old? How do we find someone who trades pins? will I know it when I see them?

Pin trading is so addicting!! My kids were trading 10+ a day and because we were at WDW for nearly two weeks, we jumped on ebay and bough more for the second half of the trip! :rotfl: THey spent their money on it, too, so they really appreciated it.

We kept ours in a sandwich baggie in the bag we were carrying. Only take your traders for that day, not everything. They do get heavy. Also, if you are searching for many sets (between 7 cousins that were with us it got confusing who was collecting what), we kept photos of them on our cell phones. Sounds crazy just typing it, but it really helped out! No she has that...no she doesn't...what's the photo say? There you go!!

To the OP and other posters on this board...if you are buying pins for $1 or less on ebay, they are FAKE!!!!

By doing this, yes you are saving yourself money, but you are infiltrating POOR QUALITY, FAKE, AND UNLICENSED PINS to EVERY OTHER DISNEY visitor and CM!!

PLEASE DON'T DO THIS!! Pin trading is FUN but it is also EXPENSIVE!!! Pins at Disney range from $6-$12+ EACH! How could a seller on ebay sell THOUSANDS so cheap unless they are fake? They Can't!!!

Please take time to look at the collector's board, there are SEVERAL threads that have reputable Disney pin sellers on ebay..but you can guarantee, they don't sell them in lots of 100 for under a buck a piece!!

Even if you are "just buying them for the kids to have fun" you are TRULY damaging the hobby for EVERYONE else that pin comes into contact with.

You CAN get authentic pins from ebay sellers that are much cheaper than from the parks you just need to educate yourself.

On behalf of myself and other avid Disney Pin Trading enthusiasts...PLEASE don't disregard your conscious and buy fake, cheap pins..it hurts everyone!

For us newbies to pin trading, how can we know when we are ordering online? I'm considering trying this for the first time with my 8 & 10 year olds when we go this summer. If the ebay site says that the pins are authentic and tradeable, how do we know if they really are or not? Maybe for us who are new to this you could give additional helpful info. It sure seems like a good deal when they say "mystery lot of pins for $1 each, authentic and completely tradeable" (or whatever it says, I'm going from memory).

Thanks!!

Of course people who are selling fakes are going to tell you they are completely authentic. But the truth of the matter is that there is NO WAY you can buy authentic pins for less than about $3 each.

The bulk sellers on eBay buy the pins from counterfeiters in China for pennies apiece. They sell them for a dollar apiece and make a HUGE profit. They buy 500 each of 10 designs, break them into "lots" and off they go. And the parks are flooded with fakes. :sad2:

We used to love pin trading, but we are just about over it. The fakes have taken all of the fun out of it. I am going to throw the traders we have on hand in our Owner's Locker and we'll trade through them, but when those are gone we are FINISHED trading.

From now on I will buy a few special pins each trip to add to my collection, and that's it.

Given the amount of fakes now in the parks, this is what we do. We don't trade anymore. We just buy a few that we want while there and collect them.
