Pin Trading?

So, we never really cared about pin trading... but the last few trips we were given lanyards and a special pin with out Disney Visa package. Of courese, DS thought this was super cool. I did buy ONe pack of pins for him to trade, but it's not really something I care about investing in.

Of course he is all excited about doing this again on our trip... can I bring pins with us that we bought elsewhere? What are the rules?

As long as they are metal Disney pins & it says Disney on the back, it's tradable.

I believe they also need to have the Mickey head backings.

They don't have to have the mickey back on the back of the pin. For instance we put the permanent backs on some of ours because we lost some during our last trip! You can buy "trading" pins on ebay for $1.50 a pin these are just filler pins. Disney has a hidden mickey pin set that they give out that are only on the CM lanyards and then there are teal lanyards that only kids can trade from.

I stand corrected then, lol. I wasn't sure - so it's good to know. Good tips as well.

All of my pins but one have the mickey backings and it's a huge Snow White one that has 2 of the hooks because it needs that much support, lol. But it's my favorite Snow White one so I wold never dream of trading it in the first place.

And I actually just ordered a batch of about 10 pins off Ebay for cheap to trade when I go in July. It's a really great way to go about it, actually.

Pin trading is very addicting. There's a long thread on the Collector's Board with recommendations of eBay sellers, drop by and give us a look! We'd love to help you get some pins to trade while in the parks.

I forgot to say that there are also Mystery lanyards! The lanyard is worn backwards and all you can see are the backs!! That is where I go my double back my first year.IT wasn't a very good one but it was really neat!! BUT Snow white that would be fun! I collect the first Disney movie my girls loved! AND dumbo just love dumbo! That's why we had to buy the special backs. One of the Cms traded me for one with a tension back. I also have some pretty cool year of a million dreams hidden mickey ones! I also get a year pin since this will only be my 3rd year going I can start at the first time ever!

So they do have to be "real" stamped pins... So far we have bougth one pack that we let him trade from and then let him trade the ones we get with the visa package. It's not really something I care to invest in.. just wanted hhim to get to trade a couple each time.

Not necessarily. While that's a good rule of thumb, there are two notable exceptions.

Cast Members (at least per Pin Trading guidelines) will also accept Pins purchased from one of our Operating Participants as long as they have a specific Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World Resort, or other Disney Park affiliation on them. Case in point, we can accept pins purchased from Rainforest Cafe restaurants in Anaheim, Orlando or Tokyo (which say Anaheim, Orlando or Tokyo on them), but not from Dallas.

In addition, there are certain Metal Disney Pins that have a (c)Disney endoresment which are not acceptable for trading. These include, but are not limited to:

• Disney Trainer Pins
• TWDC Service Award Pins
• Spirit of the Disneyland Resort Award Pins
• Partners in Excellence Award Pins
• Celebrate Giving Cast Program Costume Pins

...I just had to sit through a 2 hour class on this, I need to share it somewhere, lol.

Is there a website for the normal (non-CM) member to figure this stuff out?

It's fairly obvious when pins are created for Cast Recognition purposes (generally, they don't have colors) or are part of a Cast Member's costume (you generally wouldn't buy those off eBay, at least for a reasonable price).

Honestly, the total number of pins impacted by those exemptions is miniscule compared to the total number of pins. Just carry on as you would normally. Most Cast Members would tell you if they couldn't accept the pins.

Sooooo, since you just went thru training can I ask you a question? I was under the impression that Sedesma and Euro Pins were not tradeable with CM's but I've heard differently recently, did you guys talk about that in training?

I've actually never heard anything about it here in Florida. However, when I was at DLR, the policy was to accept them, as long as they have a (c)Disney on the back.

Our aim regardless of the Resort is to provide the Legendary Guest Service that Disney Parks is known for, and that qualifies as part of that. We certainly want Guests, especially those who may be new to Disney Pin Trading

I will admit that I was slightly exaggerating on that point, lol. It was more having a Manager just talk at length about Pin Trading and the different kinds of pins and how they're made and why Cast Members wearing Lanyards while On Stage was important.

Nothing of a super-secret nature, lol. It was all stuff you could find online or by asking any Disneyana enthusist. While Disney Pins are an important part of life at Disney, they're not that complicated, lol.

I haven't been into pin trading, but I'm kinda bummed I didn't get a pin or 2 for DD during her 1st visit last year. Might be something fun for her to collect every time we go. I'll have to check out Ebay and then I won't care if she trades those. I loved the idea of sticking to a theme or something. That was great.

I ordered some pins off of ebay, and we got them the other day. I ordered 20 (10 per kid). They were, I think, $1.13/pin, you choose how many pins, with free shipping. It was a pretty decent assortment. I just let each kid take turns picking one until they were all divided up. Each got a pin or two that they love and probably won't trade, and each got several that I think they will trade. I'm actually looking forward to it more than I thought I would. I think it will be a fun way for them to get some cheap but somewhat personalized souvenirs.
