Pin Trading

I know that people have talked about pin trading on the boards, but when I searched a couple of Forums I came up empty. So I'm going to ask my questions here and hope for some replies. Oh don't worry My trip isn't untill May 20th!
1. Are there certain places to do Pin trading in each park and/or reasort. I know from experience that WL had a book out that you were allowed to swap pins out of, I think the limit was 2.
2. I have pins that I "DO NOT WANT TO TRADE", because they have special meaning to me. IE: {Star Wars Weekends Pin, Keys To The Kingdom Pin} So do I leave these pins at home or is there a way to let someone know that certain pins are off limits to trading?

I feel bad that no one has answered your ?, and I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help. I know that the kids can ask a Cast Memeber to trade, but I don't think they like to trade with adults, I know that you can trade with other people walking around the park, we would just go up and ask to see their pins and then ask if they would make a trade. Of course you have to be willing to say your not willing to trade something if you don't want to. I would never take with you the pins that you don't want to trade on your trip, but that's just me, I hate losing pins and my daughter is known for losing things sometimes. My son had a great time trading, he like finding the one's from Euro Disney, and one's for YOMD. They had fun, but again it was the kids doing it, I didn't see any adults trading.

i have alot of pins and i love to trade before i go to WDW or DL i go on ebay and buy a bunch of pins. i usually keep the pins i like in my hotell. i do still bring a few with me. being only 11 the CM's have to trade with me and i get to decide what pin i give them and what pin i get. i have a pin backpack that i put all my pin tradeing stuff in before i leave (landards( cant spell) , pins, etc) but every year i buy new pins to trade. hope this helps , mriethebee

At Downtown Disney there is a Pin Traders, and many hard core traders set up shop on the tables outside the store.

There is also a Pin Traders inside Epcot and some of the hardcores set up shop there, too.

Trading a pin is completely up to you. If someone sees a pin of yours that they want, just tell them that one is not available.

Only castmemember who have pins on a lanyard must trade any pin they have for any Disney pin a guest would like to trade. Private trading is completely up to you.

I dont think you need to leave any behind. Part of the fun, at least for me, of pin trading is seeing what is in each collection!

First if you go to the bottom of the home page there is a board called Disney Colletors Board or click here http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=37 You'll find many posts about pins and trading etiquette (sp). I once got pulled/pushed across a store by a CM who pulled out a cork board and let me trade off of it. I haven't traded with patrons of the park. Some may want to and some may not.

As for favorites, I carry my Tink collection in a seperate bag just in case I have to check to see if I have the pin already. Those pins are definately not for trade but I wouldn't mind showing them off.

Persoanlly I only take the pins I want to trade into the park with me. I put 12 pins on my lanyard before I head out for the day and just trade those. Any pins that I traded for that I want to keep I put in my purse so I don't accidentally trade them again, then I leave those back in the hotel room.

For places to pin trade, the CM's in the parks with lanyards or cloth pouches on their waist. The resort shops have pin trading books or boards that are brought out at certain times each day. Or you could trade with other guests if you want to (although personally I have never done that! Too shy I guess!!)

The pins I have to trade I have either bought her in the UK Disney store before hand or have recieved in pin exchanges or pins I exchanged with CM's and thn realised that I already had! I also buy pins in the parks from the various shops and carts, but these are always keepers that go straight into my pin bags when I get back home.

I'm not sure if this is still the case, but as far as I know, there are two types of Cast Member lanyards, purple and teal.

To be honest, I don't remember which is which, but one is for children only, and one anybody can trade with. The previous poster who said CM's don't like to trade with adults may have been referring to those CM's who had on the "kids only" lanyard.

I've seen how their lanyards work...they keep them in a drawer behind registers and such and just put one on when they get onstage. They aren't their personal pins in most cases, so provided you try to trade them an authentic Disney pin, they can't say no.

For me, I put the pins I'm willing to trade in my pockets (mostly because I trade almsot exclusively with cast members) and wear a lanyard with a "display collection" on it for people to admire (that, and it's very handy for amusing young children on the bus after a long day).

As for places to trade....

The Hat at DHS, the Pin shop in Frontierland in the MK, outisde Island Mercantile at AK, and behind the Sphere at EPCOT are the big places you might find people trading.

CMs are everywhere. Green lanyards/felt squares are for kids under 9 only. Black is for everybody. When trading with a CM, if it's on the lanyard and you've got a genuine Disney pin to trade they can't say no (unless of course, you're over 9 and trying to trade off a green lanyard/square). If a pin isn't on their lanyard/square it is probably their personal pin that they choose to wear.

DTD's pin stop is the biggest place to trade.

As for letting somebody know you don't want to trade a certain pin, just come right out and tell them that that pin isn't for trade. I've never had a problem with this.

The "Special Pins" that I am talking about I recieved for the Keys to the Kingdom tour, the Wild By Design tour and also the 2008 Star Wars Weekend Pin. The tour pins can not be bought! The SWW pin is limited eddition! That is why I was asking the Question.

Any time! They just made the switch this year, though. It was still Green and Teal in December, but when we were there in February, they were black instead of Teal! It threw me for a bit!

First of all I want to say i love pins and have been trading at the parks for many years.

If you have some special pins that can not be replaced without spending a lot of money on Ebay for them...I would leave them at home. I love to see other peoples pins but the backs do tend to come loose sometimes and you could end up losing them on a ride or just walking. Also, if a child sees a pin that you have and they want to trade with you it is very hard to say No not that one but can I give you another one and see their smile turn upside down.

As far as trading with cast members if they are wearing a lanyard or hipster they must trade with you unless they already have your pin or it is a childs lanyard (used to be green not sure what color it is this year). They wear them all over the parks and at most resorts. Just remeber do not touch you would not want someone touching you or grabbing something around your neck.

Be careful buying large quantities of pins pins for very little money there are a lot of fake Disney pins out there and cast members can turn them down. If the deal seems to good to be true it probably is. In the parks they have many different starter sets and lanyards that help you to get started.

Pin trading is a lot of fun and you get to meet a lot of very interesting people.

yes - a CM is not supposed to take a pin that is already on their lanyard. That has happened to us.

But it is not that common that you and the CM will have the same pin.

They can refuse, but with the amount of pins out there, the odds that the only pin you'll have to trade is already on a lanyard are astronomical.

Plus, most cast members are nice enough to trade anyway. I've seen more than a few with duplicates on their lanyard. Granted, the duplicates are almost always on the kids-only lanyards, but those pins are the ones the kids want.

I am new to all this...how many pins should we bring with us on our trip? (we have two boys, ages 5 and 7). Should I just buy a bunch on ebay? I know they'll enjoy trading, but don't think they'll care what they end up with!

I've been pin trading since it became official in 2000 (I believe that's the year it started officially) and have always brought anywhere from 5-15 pins to trade, but I'm a serial trader. I trade constantly.

Given that your boys are the ages where they'll probably be distracted by other things, I'd reccomend about 5 pins a piece.
