Five is definitely old enough. Our youngest was only about 1 and a half and still got the concept. He wanted to trade like his siblings and would pick out something off the lanyard of the CM, but he had a great time.
My son was 5 on our trip in May when he started pin trading. HE ABSOLUTLEY LOOOOOOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! His little sister (2 years old) wanted to do it too. I bought her a lanyard our last day and she got a pin.
My son was even fortunate enough to get one of the Tinkerbell Dream pins. It is his favorite now.
I have already bought some pins on clearance at the Disney Store for our next trip (whenever that may be).
Will someone explain to me how pin trading works? My DH's cousin gave us about 30 of them for our upcoming trip for the three kids 8,7 & 4 but I'm not sure how it works.
