Pin Trading Question - Loose or on the Card?

OK, when I first dived into Pin Trading last December, I had bought some lots on E-Bay, using the threads here to try and avoid scrappers, but all of them came without the card backings that you would get buying the pin in most cases. Now, I am restocking on tradables for our upcoming trip in October, and I was wondering.

When last I went, I had purchased the 10th Anniversary Large Pin Bag before heading down to WDW. I painstakingly put every pin I had in the pages, and used that to trade out of. While the bag was a great thing to highlight to others that I trade pins, it was kind of bulky to keep opening and closing on the fly with pin trading CMs.

My questions are this

1) If I have a trading pin that is on the card back, should I take it off the back to put in the bag's pages, or keep it on the back and just put it in one of the zipper bags that are between the pages?

2) Does trading a pin with it's proper back make it a better trade or no?

3) For CMs, I was thinking of keeping some loose pins in one of my shorts' pockets to trade on the go, so I would not need to always open the bag. What do others think of that?

I think the cards are personal preference. If it is a pin I am going to keep, I don't worry about the card too much. However, I do have pins that are on the card pinned into the book. I think if you are willing to trade them, keeping the card would be of good interest.

I don't recommend keeping pins in your pocket for the fact they could rub against one another and get scratched up and then become less desired. I realize that you will probably trade them to a CM but it wouldn't be nice for someone else to receive a scratched up pin from that CM. Just good pin manners in my opinion!

My family uses a specific lanyard to hold our tradeables. If we use them all, then we will put more on it if needed.

Some people prefer trading for pins on cards and some don't care. It seems to be a toss up. I wear my trading pins on a lanyard and keep the others that are more valuable and LEs in my pin book. I have some 3 ring notebook binders with baseball card sheets in them. I put the pin with it's card in the card slot. Then I put a cardstock card the same size as the pin back with the pin information writte on it facing the other direction (on the back side of the clear plastic slot). That way I know by looking behind the pin if it is an LE and how many people are looking for it on Pin Pics. It also helps when someone is looking to do a trade.

I thought about that. My fiance works at JoAnn's and they have those little jewelry ziplock baggies, so I figured get the size that would hold pin and card and that should prevent them from scratching each other, right?

I think that would work. And just FYI, a lot of scrapper pins are known to come in those small zip bags. So, if someone looks at you funny, be sure to explain that you put them in the bag to keep them from scratching one another!

I would only be using the bags for those that are on the cards already, so hopefully no one has scrappers on cards. The loose pins will go on the pages. Betsy picked up some 3"x4" Write-On Heavy Duty Recloseable Bages at Jo Ann's and they work perfect for what I want to do!

Scrappers don't usually come on cards. I use those little baggies to carry mine around too, I've received many a dirty look from "professional traders" while reloading my lanyard between trades but I don't care. I know they are not scrappers and once the aforementioned trader gets a good look they know too. Altho I have had many try to convince I don't know what I'm talking about I very much do and when I point out how I know they move on.

Enjoy trading, I love having my pins in little baggies all safe from scratches and ready for trades.

How can you tell if a pin is a scrapper pin or not? I have bought a few on e-bay for my DS(1) to start trading in a few years. 2 lots of 20 but the pins all have years on them and have the Disney ears backs.

Hi All,

Well, before my entire collection was stolen out of my car I was pretty heavy into pin trading myself. That was back when things were hot and heavy in '03 and unless things have changed significantly, the CM's would take things off the card when they received them to put them on their lanyards.

And, the only people who really got their knickers in a knot about a pin not being "Mint On It's Original Card" were the folks who intended to turn around and resell the things. Incidentally, they were usually the very same folks who were major Poo-poo heads to deal with and who would think nothing of cheating a kid by giving them a piece of virtually untradable junk for something really good.

As for how to best carry them to prevent damage, what I used to do was use a stiff felt sheet from the craft store (things tend to look best on black) that I would poke them through (you could get anywhere from 25 to 50 pins on it depending upon size and how densely you packed them) and then if I was pressed for space I could roll the whole kit and caboodle up and it packed pretty small. Of course, being a girl I did have the advantage of carrying a purse so stowing them was not a problem. But it would work equally well tucked into a fanny pack.

I used to keep the cards (partly because I tend to be a bit OCD and partly because I don't throw practically anything away, just ask my hubby in a ziplock bag so that I had them should anyone really want one, but real people (not folks in the business of resale) rarely did.

I also used to keep a couple of different lanyards pinned up and ready to go, one would have pins to trade almost exclusively with CM's (the easy to find items that could usually still be purchased), one with LE's and CM only editions to trade for items of equal scarcity.

I would usually keep this lanyard in my pocket or purse so that if I encountered another guest who just wanted to trade with someone I could trade like for like. I really tried to avoid putting myself into the situation where I would feel like I needed to refuse a trade with another guest and I never refused a trade with any kid.

They are just pins after all and they are supposed to brighten someone's day not put your kids through college

Enjoy the hobby, it really can be fun and now that it appears that most of the dealer's have moved off to the next big thing, it can be what it always should have been, a wonderful keepsake to invoke good memories of happy times.
